Hard Drive Failure-How to read/repair drives in another system
« on: January 26, 2011, 07:05:06 AM »

can i pull out my HDs from the DNS323 and put into a windows computer and read them and try to recover some data?

My drives are failing their seagate tools test, but I can still see the directory and file structure in a ubinto booted machine, although I know nothing of linux and any hard drive tools to either scandisk or chkdsk to help repair data or recover.

I run 2 x 1.5tb seagate drives in NAS and the vol2 with the BT on it is failed and doesnt report on the NAS anymore.
Each drive run as a separte volume.

I have win7 winxp machines and a ubintu CD that I can boot to.
thanks for you help
I wonder if there are better NAS systems out there?

Yes... but you have to install a ext2fs driver in order for Windows to be able to access the data.  You can try http://www.fs-driver.org/ or http://www.ext2fsd.com/

Should be able to install both.  According to: http://www.fs-driver.org/faq.html - defrag is not supported.  Not sure about other disk tools.

I wonder what tools I can use then to recover the data?

I get the outside write error on the seatools, but the ubintu sees the drive and directory structure  but cannot copy my movie files from the drive.

Looks like this did the trick
http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html
installed and assigned the drive letters to the NAS drive and can see the directories.
But still have a corrupt HD and no tools to fix or overcome the problems.

If SeaTools is reporting a failure, your problem goes beyond simply corruption of the disk - it's unable to read/write to one or more sectors.

Try retrieving data from the other drive.
