Low signal issues
« on: September 19, 2008, 05:48:13 AM »

I have a 655 and a Mac Powerbook. In the status screen under wireless it shows my laptop receiving 36% signal.  The problem is it is 6 feet away from the router, unobstructed. I get 46 tops unless I set the laptop right next to the router. I have read lots of posts on the forums and cant figure it out.  I have the router chest high on top of a media cabinet.

I had a linksys g router and my roommate who is down the hall never got below 75%. Now he gets 1-7%.

Whats the problem?? Can anyone help?

I have the same problem.  I only get a signal greater than 75% when the router is less then 6 feet from my DWA 643.  Any ideas from anybody?

No probs here (100% at 15 meters with walls in between).

What firmware do you use?
Tried any other channels (set to manual)?

Since you don't mention any actions taken you might want to elaborate some more on the configs and situation.

I am using Firmware 1.20 A3 and I have tried to use G & N, G only, switched between channels manually, port fowarding, reserving my mac address, Im running out of ideas.  I also stood my router up which didn't help.  My internet connection runs really slow.  My PC which has a 556 PCI Ex card runs perfect even with a signal of 46% just my mac and my roommates computer run really slow...I mean you open firefox and wait 35 seconds for the page to load even with google as my homepage.  There are other networks around but I don't think the signal should be this low.  Does anyone have any ideas?   Please throw me a line.

Downgrade to 1.11 or 1.11 MsBeta39 ór upgrade to 1.21 beta to see if you get better results. I also had signal strength performance issues with with 1.20.

There are testing tools for wireless you can use. But you should use a wireless access point to aid the DIR-655 if you're not getting a stronger signal. Remember those 3x ANT are only 2dbi each even replacing them with 9dbi might help somewhat.

Look at the Advanced wireless properties.  Which boxes do you have checked?

Thanks I will try that.  I will also check my advanced settings and reply.

The only option I have checked is WMM enable.  I still have a signal of only 66% 5 feet away.  My roommate is 15 feet away with only a 12% signal.  Whats the deal?

try these settings

also move the router, try it in the other side of the room, i get nearly 100% just by moving it across the room

if there is a mirror in the next room. try move the router on the side NOT right on back of mirror ;P

Does the router have anything near it that can interfere and/or diminish the wireless signal coming from it?

Things such as mirrors, cell phones, cordless phones, UPS, Ham Radio and neighboring wireless signals can interfere with the router

Also as a last resort, you may want to try this router in a different environment (i.e. a different home) if at all possible and see if the same problem exists there. If it does, most likely the router needs to be replaced

I moved my router into a central location between rooms and the signal went up only 5% for each connection.  I am going to borrow my buddies trendnet router and see what kind of signal I get.  I just don't understand how my old G router gave everyone 96-100% in the exact same spot as this N router?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

try these settings

I also tried these settings and nothing happened.  Same signal as before.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I was tinkering around and came across the Status-Statistics and I am getting an error for every couple hundred transmissions.   :o  Why is this? I know that neighboring wireless could be a cause but this seems excessive. Anyone have issues like this?
