DIR-615 B2 2.25 with Windows 98
« on: October 17, 2008, 05:41:29 AM »

Here's my problem...I just purchased the router from Tigerdirect and didn't see anywhere that said the router had to be used with Windows XP or Vista.  I tried to hook the router up to my Windows 98 machine via a wired connection, although all of the lights funtion as they should, I am unable to connect to the Internet.  I called tech support and when I said Windows 98, the conversation was over.  Anyway, is it possible to use this router on a Windows 98 machine via a wired connection?  If so, please offer suggestions on how to accomplish this.  I tried to use the manual configuration method, but was not able to connect to 192.168.0.1 on this machine.  I was able to connect when I hooked it up to my Windows XP machine though.  I am wanting to connect the Windows 98 machine with a wire and then my Windows XP machine through the wireless feature.  I could upgrade my Windows 98 machine to Windows XP...but I don't think the hardware in the old machine could handle the resources required for XP.  I'm hoping someone out there has some good news for me...thanks.

Hello jswalt,

Windows 98 a very outdated Operating System. Even if you had Windows 98 Second Edition there is no guarantee it will work with the newish DIR-615 model. With that, here are things you can try:

If you have a switch/hub just connect that to the router. Then just connect your windows 98 machine to the switch/hub. This may resolve your problem.

Check to see if you have updated NIC card drivers. It may be very hard to track them down though since again, windows 98 is outdated and is actually no longer supported my Microsoft even!

You can also try setting a IP address manually on your windows machine. Go into network neighborhood and go to your Network card properties and set the following:

IP address: 192.168.0.90
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee any of this will work.

Best of luck,

Russell

Hey Russell...thanks for the advice.  I tried your third item and it seems to be working fine.  I really appreciate the help.  Hopefully I can get the wireless feature working on the XP side of my system now.
