PPTP VPN Interet Issue
« on: September 30, 2008, 07:46:45 PM »

I have successfully connected to my DIR-330 via a PPTP tunnel from a remote Vista client.

I am able to access everything inside my private network with no problems, however I cannot view internet web pages.  IE states that the website was found but nothing ever loads.

What is weird is that I am able to ping any website's domain and get a response.

Any suggestions?
I do have the Vista PPTP client set up so that it uses the remote gateway if that helps.

Thanks.

It appears I may only ping an internet domain if I had visited the site before I established a VPN connection to the router.

sounds like the DNS being given by your PPTP connection may be bad and so you are only able to access cached DNS results.  Try setting a manual DNS server on the PPTP connection.

I tried using other DNS servers out on the internet but I still get the same problem.

I even tried using Firefox to see if I had an IE issue with the same results.  I am able to ping any domain on the internet and I am able to tracert to any domain.  I see any domain I type in resolve to its IP address and I see the packets move through my VPN server and then directly to my ISP's gateway and then out to the internet.

My browser just does not load the page and gets stuck on "Waiting for http:\\website".

I have also tried and failed to make NNTP connections and I cannot connecto to my ISP's POP3 mail server.
The strange thing is that I am able to establish FTP connections to servers on the internet and connect to GoogleTalk with no trouble.  It almost sounds like the DIR-330 is not allowing returning traffic on the Web and POP3 ports to come through.

Any more suggestions?

I had actually missed the bit about pinging any domain in the first e-mail or else I wouldn't have even given that answer.

Do you have this problem with any other clients?  This router is not really capable of doing any advanced filtering so my fist suspicion is the machine's firewall.

The Firewall came to mind so I turned it off on my client but I still have the same issue.

This is a brand new Vista Business install so everything shouold be in its default state.  I tried a different XP client machine and ran into the same results as well.

Perhaps this is a bug in the routers firmware. I am running v1.12.  It was my understanding that Full Tunneling was supported starting in v1.10 of the firmware.

I have contacted tech support and their 'solution' was to disconnect from my PPTP tunnel so that I can browse the web again.  This is not an acceptable solution because one of the main reasons I bought the DIR-330 was to securely browse the web while I use public Wi-Fi AP's while away on business.  If I disconnect from the VPN then it goes without saying that my web traffic is not encrypted at all.

I hope we can get this figured out.

First and foremost, if you have the name of the agent or the case ID could you PM me that information as that answer is ridiculous.

As for your actual problem, full tunneling has always been allowed, it is split tunneling that was added.  I do not believe this is a bug in the firmware, i believe it is a problem of implementation.  That said this is a bit cumbersome to troubleshoot over the forums, so I will leave you with 3 options (in reverse order of my preference).

1. Call TS again ensuring you call the BCS line at 1 877 354 6555.
2. Include in the PM requested above that you want to follow option 2 and I will give you my e-mail address so you can e-mail me a config file to troubleshoot with.
3. Include in the PM requested above that you want to follow option 3 and then set up remote access into your DIR-330 so I can get a user set up and attempt to dial in myself.  This would be the quickest method and the one that will work best but is most intrusive.

Regardless of the method you pursue I humbly ask that once we have everything working for you then please post exactly what the issue was in this thread so future VPN setups and be assisted by the knowledge.

Go to your PPTP client's properties and then go to the TCP/IP properties
- Go the the Advanced button
- Uncheck "Use default gateway on the remote network"
