Network activity light constantly blinking
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:41:17 PM »

I'm not sure when this problem began, but the blue network activity light between the two drive lights of my DNS-323 is constantly blinking even if there is no reason for it (even if everything else (such as the main desk top, network attatched printer, the router) is powered down and the DNS is the only thing connected to the switch. In consequence, the drives are no longer powering down.
LLTP, the itunes, UPnP and DHCP servers are all turned off and I've never used FTP.
The problem seems to have begun around the time I upgraded to the 1.05 firmware, or perhaps when I clicked on the BT button in EasySearch. I'm not sure since I can't see the DNS from my desk and only noticed the problem when I noticed that I no longer had to wait for the drives to spin up anymore.
BTW this must be related: when the DNS is on all eight activity lights on my switch (the D-link DGS-1008D) blink in unison... things go back to normal when I turn the 323 off.
Anybody have an idea of whats going on?

You may be confusing cause & effect.

First the network activity light flashes whenever there is network activity, which may or may not be network traffic to/from the DNS-323 - just as an example, any broadcast traffic will be sent out (broadcast) on all the switch ports and whenever this happens you will see the network activity light on the DNS-323 flash - if the broadcast traffic does not relate to the DNS-323, then it will stay in a low power mode.

On the other hand - you have indicated that all your switch ports lights blink in unison (which pretty much indicates that the network traffic is some sort of broadcast) and this stops when the DNS-323 is turned off - so it is the DNS-323 that is sending the broadcast.

It sounds like there is an application of some sort running on the DNS-323, and that is what is creating the traffic and keeping the disk(s) from powering down - in short the flashing network activity light is not the cause of the disks not powering down, but an effect of the application running on the DNS-323.

You mention BT as one possible cause - another possible one could be an unprinted print job stuck in the print queue - in the web interface there is a button to clear the print queue try that and see what happens.

Thanks Fordem!
What you say sounds very logical and I'm sure you're right.
Unfortunately, BT has never successfully loaded on the DNS-323. I hit the Easy Search BT button, it seems to install BT but when I log in to the web application it says that BT is not installed and to go to Easy Search. Could some kind of failed installation be at the root of my problems?
Otherwise, I have never installed a Linus application on the 323 and as far as I know have only data on it (other then the DNS operating modules or whatever they're called).
Everything is backed up, but I have over a terrabyte of data on my two drives... I really hope I won't have to reformat!

Thanks in advance.

Lucy

It does sound like a failed installation might be a possible cause.

Try searching the forum for bit torrent, I believe there was a question asked about removing it and there may be removal instructions there.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
It seems that getting rid of the BT utility requires reverting to firmware 1.04, which I did.
That seems to have helped the problem, but not completely solved it. Rather then constant network light flashing, it only revs up every 10 minutes or so in a ten second flurry of activity.... just often enough to keep the drive from spinning down!
It does sound like the cause is something installed on the drive and I'm sure the BT client is the only thing ever installed.
Unfortunately I still can't delete the BT folders and from what I read there isn't any simple way to do it.
If anyone has any advise on that I'd love to hear it!

This issue should be resolved in the next firmware update. Unfortunately there is no option to change the permissions on the BT folders.

How to recognize, when the box is in "power save" mode? I even take a network cable off, but light are the same after 15 min (not blinking). In settings is 5 min "turn off hard drives".

The LED that illuminates the square D-Link logo/button goes off when the unit is in "power save" mode.

I'm also inclined to say you need to look a little more closely at the LEDs - if you take a (the) network cable off, the network link/activity LED (three square boxes in the center below the D-Link logo/button) will go out.
