What is the truth about the different firmware versions?
« on: November 14, 2008, 09:26:13 AM »

I have heard and read a lot of connection problems related the to 1.21 firmware, and saw a lot of people recommending to go back to the older firmware...

Is there any proof that the 1.21 is really that bad?

In fact, what are the optimal settings, to reduce cpu usage, and reduce lag?

Thank You.

No problems here with 1.21 and using a lot of the features/option (no security though)

1.21 works fine for me.  I work with a number of port forwards on my 655 for things like Remote Desktop Connection for Windows, dynamic DNS, and a few other things.  It all works flawlessly.

i am seeing some, well, ALOT of complaining about 1.21 upgrades  so...

is it recommended to restore a config form an old firmware such as 1.1 when upgrading to 1.21  or is it best to simply start over from scratch??

i have ALOT of settings that would simply be impossible to go thru and redo without getting 1/2 of them wrong or taking screen shots of every page.

and eddie,, no offense brothu but it seems that you have the perfect unbreakable router as i never see you have any problems.

I was able to use a 1.11 config (or I upgraded the GWS from 1.11 to 1.20 to 1.21, can't remember excactly)

Part of the issues that arise are not always a DIR655 problem. Connection issues, wireless connection rate, DNS issues etc are often caused by ignorance, absurd ISP modem configs, double NATting, 2 DHCP servers on subnet, you name it...Working for a global IT firm...if I even can't get my home network in good working order... :-[

I am very very pleased with the DIR655. I have 5 wireless connections from 60% to 95% throughout my home; full concrete walls with steel bars inside, 3 stories and plenty of wireless neighbours. And yes, there are some functions not working properly in 1.21 (scheduler, WOL forwarding etc). And the ones not working OK ...I accidently don't have a need for those, the ones I do use work fine (RDP, gaming, Voice, wireless mediaserver, shareport with 2 printers and 2 USB HDD). I'll let you know when I run into an issue.  8)

You will almost always see more complaints than praise because, well, if you have no problems why would you be on a help forum?

Personally I've had a positive experience with 1.21. I am using WPA, DynDNS, port forwarding and port redirecting as well as assigning some appliances in my house static IPs via staticDNS. The only thing I can't figure out is why I can't get my Macbook or my roommate's Macbook Pro to use 802.11n instead of g. But that issue aside, my router has been stable and up for about 50 days now.

Oh yeah, and I used my backup config from 1.11 after the update.

Thank G. I'm not the only one quite satisfied...  :D

I've been using 1.21 since the betas, and have experienced no problems.

I have a relatively complex home network - 18 devices, remote access, VPN, Slingbox, VUDU, TiVo, WHS, Vista, XP, phones, VOIP, etc. All work fine.
