Am I doing this correctly ?
« on: December 02, 2008, 09:21:59 PM »

I have had two WD 500 GB drives installed for about a year now - RAID 1.   Last month I noticed one of the drives (right bay) did not have LED lit.  I power cycled and heard click click click..... hmmm bad drive.

Status screen showed 1 drive installed.

Anyhow I received an email from the administrator indicating one drive failed.  I swapped in another new 500GB drive and it indicated that it required formatting.  So I I proceeded to format.  After that the sync process went very quick (too quick I'm thinking)  But the status screen showed drives at 2 now and the sync completed message was displayed.

Two weeks later I see that status again shows only 1 drive (but both LEDs are blue).  SO I format it again and the sync completes very quickly again.  *intersting note - the pop up at login shows the RAID 1 check box is greyed out so I cant specify it*

Now I powered the unit down removed the left bay drive, then cycled power up again - status shows 1 drive but only 72K of space used ( should be around 200GB )

Since then I have put the left bay drive back in and now the web interface wants me to format the second drive again.  However, now it wants me to go through this process again when I log in.

Is this normal behaviour ?

The fact the 2nd drive only had 72K of data does not make me feel to confident that I actually have a working RAID.  If there is a better procedure to follow to configure and test - please let me know

Thanks

Yeah something doesn't seem right. What firmware are you running?
