You do realise you're comparing apples and oranges right?

For starters, a 2.0 USB external drive connects to a single computer - which is what we call DAS or Direct Attached Storage and the DNS-323 connects to a network where it can be accessed from several computers - it's what's called NAS or Network Attached Storage.

If what you want is external storage for a single system - go with the external USB drive - it will be significantly faster.

... and if you are insistent on determining speeds, you may want to measure it in Mbps.  A couple of quick search will yield a maximum USB 2.0 speed of 480Mbps; a Gigabit NIC provides twice that.

To get a better sense of what you can actually achieve in your environment, you'll need the throughput specs for:

- Your systemboard USB 2 bus
- Enclosure USB 2 bus
- Throughput of the HDD to the Enclosure bus


From a network perspective, you'll need the throughput specs for:

- Your network switch
- Your systemboard NIC speed
- DNS-323 NIC speed
- Throughput of the HDD in the DNS to the backplane

I would say about half the speed of a typical USB 2.0 HDD, maybe a little less.

I would say the same HDDs (1 TB WD Black Caviar). Enclosure, most likely a VANTEC. Using a 24 way Gigabit Netgear managed switch capable of jumbo frames. Cat 5e cabling throughout the house.

Reason why I am asking this is to ensure that I have enough juice to render HD streams as follows: from the 323 to the PC and from the PC to the PS3 (need this setup since the Media Server on the 323 does not recognise m2ts files).

Do you guys think a gigabit network setup like this would work? Otherwise I will have to go with a USB external drive plugged directly into the PS3.

Gigabit should be fine to stream the content.
