UPNP Refresh and XBOX 360
« on: December 15, 2008, 05:22:40 PM »

So, after finally getting the utterly stupefying error of nothing playing on my XBOX 360 due to a strange bug with the DNS, I have yet another.
The problem is as follows.  The 321 is not refreshing the media that I am adding automatically and as a result it is not showing up on my XBOX.  Whenever I have manually attempted at refreshing my 321, it refreshes just fine until 98%.  At which point it just sits there.  After a few tries, it has finished once or twice, but the data does not show up.  Also, I assume, it is resulting in unplayable files.  The XBOX will see the files, but when you attempt to play them, you get a "format is not supported" error.  If I copy the files directly from the DNS-321 to a thumb drive and play from that on the 360, it works just fine; so it is not a bad file or format.
I could really use the help as I am at the end of my line with this product.  I am not going to bad mouth this company or anything like that, but I REALLY just want this product to work so I can move on to enjoying it.  I am sick of sitting down to watch a flick or something only to have to monkey with it for an hour before just throwing the file onto my thumb drive.

-Additional Info-
Some folders also come up as empty even after a refresh.

What is you network IP address range 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or other? What file format are you having this issue with?

My network address range is 192.168.1.1 due to the other bug that the DNS has in which it does not work with the 360 if the 3rd octet is a zero.
The file format is sporadic and doesn't seem to apply to any one file format.  I also noticed that some, not all, files worked if I shortened the name.  Also, I thought maybe the files in the folder that is coming up as empty had too many so I placed them in genre folders, but that did not work either.

If you have the UPnP AV media server set to watch the root try changing it to a folder that just contains you media folder and see if it works better for you. If you are still unable to play a file try setting it just to that folder containing that file that will not play and see if it is still an issue. please make sure the file will playback on you Xbox if you are using WMP11 as your media server.

I changed from the root address to my media folder a while back.  The files do play from a thumb drive on the XBOX and that folder is still showing as empty.

What Browser are you using when you refresh you UPnP AV media server? If you haven't yet try Mozilla Firefox.

See if you can find something common in the files that do not display and let me know what file types you have this problem with.

My default browser is actually Firefox, but I have tried IE 7 when Firefox didn't seem to be working.  There doesn't seem to be any link to the video file.  Some of the exact same file types work and some don't.  The only link that I have found so far for some, not all, is that if the file name is a certain length it will play when I shorten it.  It doesn't fix every file, but it does help some.  None of my music videos, the folder that is showing blank, have this issue though.  Even the ones that had a file name that was too long still showed up.

I don't have the DNS-321, but I've experienced this across different media platforms -- consider this as a tip of things to look for as you try to find the cause.

...is that if the file name is a certain length it will play when I shorten it....

I would extend on that idea to advise that you look at the length of the path (file name+directories) has been an issue for me in the past, as have unusual characters in the file name -- including apostrophes, quote marks, double-spaces, braces/brackets/parenthesis, and high-order ASCII characters, and the sheer count of files in a directory or on the overall system.

If the DNS-321 reads metadata (such as ID3 tags), beware of strange characters or extreme field lengths there as well.  Again, I don't know if there is a problem here, it's just something to check.

Good luck.

No, it is wired in using a CAT 6 cable.

It also doesn't explain why the 321 is not refreshing on its own when I add or change files.  I have recently performed an update of my naming scheme to shorten the file names and the refresh has not taken place; this was 1.5 days ago.  I will be forced to perform a manual update.

Does it work after the manual refresh?
