Adding a 2nd drive
« on: January 06, 2009, 06:57:25 PM »

Hi I currently have only 1 (500gb)drive in the device and I am planning to add a second to increase storage. I am wondering if I have to add another 500gb or can I add a bigger drive? I am not planning to use any raid and would simply want to increase storage capacity.

Thank you for your time

PS. what is the biggest drive the firmware 1.05 support? I'm afraid to upgrade firmware because according to the firmware page I need to backup data else I can loose them during the upgrade.

Some users have reported problems with 1.5tb drives, 1tb drives seem to work fine.

On the matter of not upgrading the firmware because you could lose data through not having a backup - bear in this mind - you could lose data NOW even if you don't upgrade.  You could lose data simply installing that second hard drive.

All it takes is a virus, a software glitch, a click in the wrong place (commonly known as user error), a power outage, a hard disk failure - your options are back it up or lose it.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
