Please help with 615 RESOLVED
« on: February 08, 2011, 08:37:37 PM »

Hi folks, just joined the forum and am completely frustrated with lan.

The ONLY reason I bought a router was to get connected to my Security DVR.  I don't want to provide Internet for a network.  Maybe someday but my only wish right now is to be able to view and control my DVR with my computer.  It is hidden away and hard to get to at the moment so a Lan connection would be great.

I tried direct connect with a Crossover cable between the DVR and my computer.  The network was reporting as "Connected" but I could not see the DVR much less view the video.  Their support said they'd never heard of this configuration.  Could not understand connecting without Internet and wasn't sure if it'd work without a Router.

So, first I bought a wired router(EBR 2310) because I didn't need or want the wireless aspect.  I followed all instructions until it came to Internet connection setup.  Then became lost because I don't have a dedicated ISP,  I'm using a USB modem for connectivity.  I don't have a static IP so could not enter on.  So, backed out of setup and entered the IP of my computer to be 1 higher than my DLink routers. 192.168.0.2.  Gateway .1, NO dice.  Router not recognized.

I called support and stayed on the line over an hour.  Finally he said the unit was defective.  It would not assign IPs theough DHCP.  We ipconfiged, pinged reset and all.

I took it back and got an DIR615, hoping it might be a little better.  Same problem.  Computer says Connected" but when I ping it,  there is not sigh of it.  I have manually assigned IPs, DHCPed it reset it rebooted my computer, but still no sign of a router.

Can anyone help?

Oh, I can't access thru the Internet page either.

Well if your not trying to connect to the internet with a router, maybe using a switch or hub would be better for you. You will have to setup a static IP address on both devices to interact and connect with each other.

However your 615 should be doing the same thing. Providing an IP address to each device that you connect automatically.

First off you don't need a cross over cable when using a router. All LAN cables should be straight through.
Secondly, I would set up static IP addresses on the router for each device. So you know this will sent the IP addresses out and each device will have there own address that never changes.

Make sure that each device connected to the router is set up for automatic networking. The router will hand out the addresses. Having the static IP address in the router and on the device can cause issues. Let the router handle all the networking and have the deviced auto detect and gain the addressing.

If each device is not detecting a address and getting one, then there is an issue. Check all cabling to make sure they are good.

Apply other known working devices to the router to see if they connect.

I tried all that you said.  Along with DLink Support we have assigned IP addresses, set all machines to DHCP, except the router, which I have not been able to communicate with.

I "tried" a crossover between machines, I have straight thru since I went to router.

With all machines(computer and DVR) set DHCP, the router was not assigning IPs, wasn't even communicating.

Set computer and DVR IPs manually and still eincommunicato.

I also tried a DLink 8 port switch.  No go.  I don't have any other ethernet equipment.

DLink router----192.168.0.1
Computer------192.168.0.2
DVR-----------192.168.0.3
Gateway-------192.168.0.1
DNS-----------192.168.0.1

All new cables. Even bought a cable tester.

If you have tried a 8 port switch with out the router, did you set up a manual IP address adn sub net on the PC and the DVR to see if they communicate? I think you'll need the cross over cable for this test.

I'm wondering if the PC could have a bad NIC? Can you try a different NIC?

As stated above, I tried the switch with assigned IP.  I tried with crossover and straight.

But, I have it working now.

I changed the Gateway to 192.168.0.2 out of frustration and I got a ping.

Was able to do the Browser connection to software.

Peculiar;the ipconfig of the router said DHCP was not enabled.  When connected to Setup, it said it was enabled.

First experience with LAN connection; only took 4 days, 3 devices and 2 new cables!

Now I need to know if I can "someday" connect to the internet with the USB modem connected to PC and have access to the DVR.  But not worried about that too much right now.

AH, yes that would help. I should have thought of that. However I figured that DHCP services are enabled by default out of the box. Wonder why yours isn't.

You'll be able to connect your one PC to the USB device that provides the internet, however you won't be able to connect the router to it. You need a Modem device that has a RJ45 connection to connect to the 615 router to provide the Internet data.

Kinda what I thought.  That's why I bought an inexpensive router at the moment.  I'll try to upgrade to a router that supports USB modems at some point.

I don't think any router supports USB Modems as these types of routers are RJ45 designed for connectivity. Good luck and glad you got it working this far.

Need to do some research.  There is at least on company that has routers that support USB modems. The connect right to them.  Just a little bit more than I can spend at the moment and am not quite ready for remote connectivity.  If it's ok to mention other name brands here, I'll be glad to tell you the name.

Yea, I have never heard of a router that had a USB port as a WAN, atleast in the US. Alot of routers have USB ports on them, but thats mostly for Share Port, for like a external hard drive or printer. There are other routers where you can connect a 3G USB adapter, but thats different then a USB connection to a DHCP modem. If your looking for 3G, check this out

DIR-412

Youtube Video of it

HH, that's exactly what I was speaking of; a 3g usb modem router, but I was looking for ethernet ports as well.

Kinda like the DIR855 or some other makes which I won't list here because this is DLinks forum.
