DHCP And Internal DNS
« on: December 24, 2008, 03:42:35 AM »

I have an internal DNS server located on my network. I am currently utilizing DHCP via the DIR 625. In the past I specified DHCP from my local server to which I can specify DNS, WINS, etc.
On the 625 at setup I have the ability in DHCP to specify my internal WINS server but see no feature for local DNS. I attempted to get around this with a Virtual Server entry on the 625. Needless to say at login without a local DNS server it takes forever to login. Also I am not able to query local DNS via "nslookup" in turn uses my local ISP. From the WAN side my setup is DHCP with static ISP DNS servers stated.
Many thanks in advance for help

If DNS Relay is turned on (setup - Network), then turn it off. That feature possibly only works for DNS servers on the WAN side.

With DNS Relay off, your static-configured DNS servers on the WAN side will be what your clients get in DHCP, so you'll need to change from the ISPs DNS addresses to your LAN-side DNS address.

Be sure to reboot your computers as well as the DIR-625 after making those changes.

I replaced my Linksys with D-Link and am very happy with it overall EXCEPT for the sorry DNS functions...

The D-Link 625 "DNS Relay" works great for external DNS resolutions in that it relays internal DNS queries upstream to the ISP for resolution. It stuffs whatever DNS it gets from it's external interface DHCP request into client DHCP requests so they work fine. The serious issue/problem with it though is that it DOES NOT resolve for internal (local loan) resolution. It should retain a local cache that it can be authoritative for. In other words it should be able to resolve local lan addresses for all that match the domain specified in the setup.

If you turn off the "DNS Relay" you are forced to build a DNS service on another device. I have been forced to fire up my older Linksys just to deal with that... not my desired approach.

The other thing I cannot fathom is why the latest 1.09 version of firmware for my 625 is 2 years old. Surely there should have been an upgrade by now considering 802.11n was a draft spec!

Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem. Were you ever able to resolve it?
