Upload Speed Issue
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:06:19 AM »

There have been a couple of posts on this topic ...

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10915.msg64642#msg64642
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=23250.msg104328#msg104328

... but no resolution I've seen. My DIR-655 has been sitting on top of the SMC router (configured as a bridge) provided by Brighthouse for their 40Mb/5Mb service. Everything has been going fine until the past few weeks. My upload speeds have tanked to under 1Mb while the download speed has remained at ToS (Terms of Service).

Maybe I've burned out something on the 655's board? Who knows. Bypassing the 655 and connecting direct the speed is full ToS but with the 655 in the picture it's like it's being throttled or something. (Both wired and wireless connections to the 655 act the same.)

I think I've got HW A2 and I know I'm running FW 1.34NA (because the update to 1.35NA fails because of the slow upload speed). I've tried resetting the 655 by holding the reset switch until the LEDs flash and then reloading my gateway settings but nothing has changed.

Thoughts?

You set up on static IPs?
Do you have Advanced DNS Service enabled or do you have this option?

Are you getting Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses in the Setup/Internet/Manual section?
You connected wired I presume?
Using any options of the 655 router? QoS?

What devices do you have connected?

The 655 acquires a dynamic address from my ISP and I'm pretty sure I do not have the Advanced DNS enabled (if the option is even available). The unit has remained with the same configuration since the day Brighthouse installed the service and it was tested good (full upload speed) through the 655.

The 655 is wired to the SMC (configured as a bridge/cablemodem, not as a router) and I have both wired and wireless clients on the 655. No QoS options are enabled.

Devices connected are various and sundried internet-enabled devices (blu-ray player, television, XBox 360) as well as a primary PC (wired) and laptops and an iPad.

Stupid thought ... I don't recall having any issues before I brought the iPad into the house and connected it to the router. I wonder if there's some really strange interaction going on there. I should investigate this when I get home.

Ok,

I should have put in static IP addresses on your connected devices is what I meant. Sorry about that.  ::)

So you have an Ipad. Can you fully shut off the iPad and see if this does anything as a test.

I would make sure everything is off accept for the wired PC and just test it out. See if you notice anything. The router should not be limiting any up or down speeds unless you've set something up on it

Also check ur PC for any AV or FW software if you have this loaded. Sometimes these can effect performance.

All clients of the 655 are DHCP. I'll try disabling wireless and just doing something with the wired PC and see if there's any difference. I've worked around these kinds of embedded devices long enough to know things go wonky when the heat turns up which is why I had originally mentioned the 655 was almost burning hot sitting on top of the SMC. Mayhap I should loop up its operating temperature range. Heh.

I'll post an update tonight based on some more troubleshooting.

Anything is possible. I do have my router and modem sitting atop of my 24pt Gb HP switch. That does get hot. I have put used empty CDR cake boxes under the modem and router to elevate them from direct contact and heat from the switch.  ;D  Keep us posted.

I have my 655 sitting on top of a laptop cooler that is plugged into the USB of the router, keeps it nice and cool.

Well, that's weird. For some reason the WAN Traffic Shaping had become enabled (or was always enabled) and it was limiting the outgoing bandwidth. When the router had measured the uplink speed it thought it was a lot slower than it really was.

Once disabled, the uplink speed is what it should normally be. Going to try the firmware upgrade tonight and see how that goes. Again, that was really weird but I'm glad I solved it.

I would keep current FW loaded if you have found the problem. Run what you have currently on the router for now and if you see any other issues, troubleshoot then and see if you need to upgrade at that time.

Sounds like somebody got in to your router and changed some settings to mess with you, or is stealing bandwidth from you.

Did you ever set a proper login password besides the default one ?  Are you broadcasting your SSID with WPA/WPA2 encryption ?

Honestly, I don't think someone broke into the router. (I've got it set up with a password because I'm broadcasting the SSID.)

What I think happened was that I may have tried solving some other problem at some point (or power outage) and when the modem came back on it detected a slower-than-normal upload speed and was doing some WAN Traffic Shaping limiting. I may have always had this checked but never had a problem with it until recently for some reason. Unchecking it has solved every problem so far so I'll just have to recommend that configuration to anyone I suggest this router to.

(BTW, I <3 the 655. It's got the best connectivity and plenty enough speed for my gaming just on its normal settings without some gaming QoS engine turned on. I so rarely drop connections to this router that I can't remember the last time I did. Other routers I've had from Linksys, D-Link, etc. weren't as reliable and weren't as friendly as the 655. The DGL-4300 turned out to be a piece of crap next to the 655. I just want to buy a ton of them so I have them in stock if D-Link ever makes the mistake of stopping production on it.)
