Plug in ethernet, computer dies
« on: February 11, 2011, 08:50:00 AM »

I replaced an older 'g' router with the DIR-825 due to wireless issues. Wired worked fine. New router works great except that when I plug in the ethernet cable to my desktop, the computer immediately quits as if the power cord were unplugged. It is an Intel 82566DC on board gigabit port. I have switched cables, tried different router ports, etc., but every time I connect the ethernet, instant off. And the computer will not turn on with the cable plugged in. I installed an addin ethernet card and it works fine. Every other computer I have tried will work with the wired connection. I thought I might have a bad onboard adapter, but I connected my old router back up and the wired connection works perfectly with my desktop onboard port.

I've updated my lan drivers. I've tried other cables and computers. I just have the problem with my main desktop. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Nice post...interesting issue.

So the different Add-on card works on the PC with out issue with the 825 however if you connect the 825 to the on-board Lan port it turns off?

Have you check the properties of the on-board lan driver and look for power management options. I thought I saw a post about an issue like this. Someone mentioned turning off the power management options in the LAN driver properties helped.  Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for the reply. After I could not get the onboard port working I installed a D-link 10/100 pci card and it works well. I tried your suggestion of going to device manager and unchecking all the power management features in the affected nic properties. Turned off computer, switched cable to onboard nic, tried to boot and the computer would try to start, but would go dead after twice spinning up the fans. Unplugged cable, booted up fine, plugged in cable and one second later, computer stops. Computer still works fine with the addin pci nic.

Oh, dang. Just realized I posted this in the 855 forum not the 825 forum. Moderator, can you move this to the correct forum?  Sorry.

It's ok if you want to post here. LOL it happens.

This is definately an odd issue. Router and new NIC on PC works but if you connect back to old ON-Board LAN the PC stops working and shuts down PC.

Is the connection speed setting on the OB lan set for auto? You might try Manual 100 or 1000Mb setting.

Is there any info on the Intel site for this possibly?

Well, I posted on the Intel wired ethernet forum and received a response indicating it is probably a power problem. I have a decent power supply, PS450W, but the computer is just now 4 years old, so it may be deteriorating. I did change the speed to 100mb from auto, but that didn't change anything. Running the diagnostics on the problem nic also triggers the instant off issue at some point. I'm just glad the pci nic is working fine. I'm going to hook up my old router again to see whether or not it still works with that one. Thank you.

It seems that the older router id not using the "full" wires on the PC's network adapter and the newer is, which a power "shutdown" issue.  It would seems that the on board network adapter is defective and you would need to consider never using it again.
