DIR 655 router high ping time and other problems
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:41:43 AM »

Hi all,

I have an office network which uses satellite based internet. The internet modem is connected to a DIR 655 router. Two wireless access points are connected to that router and the users access internet through these wireless access points.

Now the problem is that when I ping 192.168.0.1 some computers have a ping time of 1 ms while a few of them shows high ping time of more than 50 ms. And these computers with high router ping times also have very bad internet performance. These computers can hardly browse the internet. You need to refresh the pages a lot of times before one page opens up.

Is this problem due to some particular router action or something else.

Please help, as we are facing great trouble here.

Thanks,

Raj.

NB: Our ISP is Bentley Walker and our standard download speed is around 500 kbps and upload speed is around 64 kbps.

Try turning off QoS if it's enabled.
Try changing the WiFi mode to Single mode G or Mixed G and N.

Satellite based Internet will always exhibit higher ping times due to terrestrial signal travel.

Yes, Satellite is usually horrible slow.  Especially with those speeds you ISP is capping you at.  The upload they are giving is similar to having dial-up.  Plus the more users you have hitting the satellite at the same time is going to slow it down for everyone.

How many user computers are in your network?

Hi FurryNutz,

Thanks for your reply. I did the necessary changes as you had asked. But I cant test the outcome now as the usual number of users are not connected to the network now.

I know that satellite based internet will have high latency. However, what I was worried about is that when I ping my local router, it was taking such a long time. So I was worried about some bottleneck in the local network.

However, I have observed one thing that when the number of users logged into the network is less then the ping time comes down to 1 ms or less (when I ping the router). So, what I am thinking is that the router is somehow getting over-flooded with requests and it is unable to handle those.

Please give your feedback on the same.

Hi davevt31,

Thanks for your reply. At the maximum, we have around 16 users connected to the network. I know the problems with VSAT internet. But, in Afghanistan, it is the best service that you can avail. But my query is not about the ISP. Rather, when the maximum number of users connect to the network, some users face problem accessing the router. I mean, they can connect to the LAN router, but when they ping the router, the latency is around 50 ms. But a few other computers on the network have a ping time of 1 ms. So, it seems that the router is unable to handle the load.

Can you please suggest something?

Thanks

Raj.

It may not be the router causing the issue, it could be the AP that they are connected too causing the delay.

You will need to try and isolate which systems have the worst pings and the access points that they are hitting.  See if it one AP that might be slower due to distance or interference.  If it's random then it will be hard to troubleshoot, but if consistantly machines that use the same AP it may be as simple as a setting on the AP or moving it around a little bit to get a better signal to the router.  Not sure if you can do a tracert to check but that may be somewhere to start.
