DLink doesn't currently have the 685 as an emulator or I would have. I would like to see what is on the 685s web page and get a feel for the router if possible.

Ya, not sure if some of these home routers handle VoIP well as VoIP is somewhat new and it's possible that these routers were just designed with out much thought or ability to handle VoIP devices.  :-\

Thank you Jony7. Good info. Nice to see what these routers have.
I see the QoS section is limited. Is it the same for you and others? Nothing to input here, at least on the emulator page.

Looking at the emulator page, QoS is limted if thats what your seeing. We might try some settings in port forwarding or Firewall for XBL and see if it helps. Not sure if this is a good router for gaming. We can certainly give it a go.

Have you look at the dir-685 emulator?  It's not very sophisticated.  Only option under QoS Engine is Lag eliminated (VoIP, Streaming) check box.  I also have SPI disabled which often breaks voice applications on most soho routers since most VoIP calls are 400+ packets per second the processors in the cheap routers can't handle it and causes too much packet loss or latency.

p.s. Reading through my previous forum postings I just noticed and wanted to add that I now realize my posts may come off as negative and critical but I really do appreciate the talent it takes make these wonderful products.  I really hope my unit is buggy and it'a not the firmware or product line itself - it would be a shame because I think this idea is innovative and will catch on once the price drops a bit.

Got RMA from online shop but since it was one of those 24-hour deals I can only return it and get a refund since they don't have any replacements in stock.  I'm gonna call DLink again in the am and see if they'll RMA a replacement.

p.s. just a little trivia - VoIP has been around for 15 years but has only recently in the last 3 years proven to be an application that is pretty solid and most, if all issues are related to improper configuration or even more so the underlying hardware layer.

Voice is a RealTimeProtocol and doesn't want to wait in line with the rest of the network traffic.  In comparison, the early 2000's - VoIP was like driving a finely tuned sports car on a pothole/traffic ridden highway.  Now, a decade later we have resurfaced the road ways with higher-speed low-cost bandwidth and have the ability to push traffic to the side of the road while the VoIP ambulance rushes on by.  TDM (electronic/digital/analog signaling) is on it's way out, ...oddly enough though, fax machines are still very widely used considering an age-old technology that really hasn't seen any increased development in over 10 years, outside of FoIP, that is.

<<VOIP>>
-->1996 - VoIP, yay! but still very buggy.
--------->2000 - Most bugs worked out but not completely solid, still expensive
-------------->2005 - Very solid and reliable with expensive network equipment and bandwidth
--------------------2011 - 99.999% reliable even delivered as a hosted service, low cost hardware and bandwidth with much more control over prioritization enforcement, I can now do VoIP either equivalent or in some cases much cheaper than traditional premise based systems, even though I do those too =)

VoIP = Thumbs up and even in this recession I am saving my clients $$$ every year - Sorry for the plug but if DLink can prove to me that it's hardware can meet the needs of VoIP for small offices and remote workers it might be worth it for them to leave this plug in!

Good to hear about the refund. I'm looking into one of these units for testing.

Interesting note about VoIP.

I'm sure Dlink can meet the needs of VoIP for small offices, however users need to understand that they need to get to RIGHT hardware and routers for there needs. Not all HW can handle everything. Nickel and dimeing to get the cheapest HW doesn't always result in the best usage or what is really RIGHT for there needs. Alot of people expect some of these house hold routers to perform to small business or corporate levels. Not going to happen man. People need to do research and think of what there needs REALLY are and get the RIGHT HW that best suits them. DLink and other Mfrs have various levels of HW to handle most or every kind of platform out there.

Any guess to see when Fax was first used?  ;)

Thought I saw something about fax being used back like 40's or 50s. Something between a Police station and a police car. Been a while since I saw it. I thought it is odd however there was a picture of the officer sitting in his car receiving a fax. Black and White. Oh well.

Keep us posted on what you do. I would consider looking at other routers if this router doe not fit your needs.
