Switched to wired...anything I need to change?
« on: April 02, 2011, 04:54:07 PM »

I just moved the router closer to the my 2 Xbox360's/PS3/Wii in order to hard wire the 360's and PS3 in an attempt to improve the performance of the router...which I am not feeling right now.  I have everyting set up from the sticky, but now that I am not using the wireless is there anything I need to change or set up to take advantage of this routers power?

Hmm, probably the first thing your going to want to do is run the Connection Wizard in the PS3 and 360. If possible, try to set the PS3 with a Static DNS. You should find the DNS on the router's status page, let us know if you need details. If you just hook up a PS3 wired after its been wireless for a while, hyperthetically, it could still be running wirelessly, and thus show you no difference at all.

Other then that, yea, look at your configuration..

I am not really sure but I believe the ps3 has two network cards, the wireless card and the on network card, so they both might have different mac addresses. So you will have to change it via the router.

Hmm, didn't think about that. Let me check.

::Runs off and tests::

Nope, looks like the same. I think you might be thinking about the BSSID, which is the mac of the source wireless access point, AKA, your router.

Okay so than he does not need to change anything because all the settings he had would transfer over, once he plugs the ps3 via Ethernet.

Well my point was that the PS3 itself might need to be told to use the wired connection after it is connected. Other wise it will just keep on using wireless?

On a somewhat related question, I have always been curious. When you connect a PS3 controller in, does it use the micro USB connection for any kind of data connection or is it still connecting wirelessly? And it uses bluetooth for the controllers right?

What about on the router itself...I am wondering because when the PS3 did the connection test it said the DOWN was 1.8mb and up was 497k.  I know that our ISP, which sucks, gives us the best package which is 15+ down and 700k up.  As of late my speedtests show normal down but up has gone down to 500k.  Anything in the router I need to change?  What about ports or DNS or anything like that?  I am going to find 1.23 as I have read that it is more stable.

Yes, there are lots of settings to change in the router, but none of them would have changed by going from wireless to wired. Were you getting these speeds wireless? If so, thats a horse of a different color.

First, do a test direct from the modem to a computer and do a couple tests, to different servers and differerent sites. myspeed.visualware.com and speedtest.net are the two I use mostly. That will give you a good baseline. Then fallow the sticky for each console. There is one for the PS3 and one for the 360.

Do as Hard Harry suggested, just follow the sticky and you will be good. Also yea hard harry he needs to go into the network settings and change the Ps3 from wireless to wired, it should automatically detect the connection. But it is much easier for him to follow the sticky guides.
