Can't get torrents to download
« on: March 31, 2011, 02:59:58 AM »

I've been playing with this for awhile and I can't figure it out. I originally set up the 323 with bit torrent first and it worked fine. I then tried to set up the FTP to work and had to change from the standard IP address access to a DDNS and had my router automatically configure it. Now that the FTP works torrents refuse to download. I can download torrents on my computer and the 323 will connect with it down download, but it seems as if my router is blocking external access?

Sorry for the lack of technical terms, as I do not work with computers for a living.

If anyone had any suggestions that would be great, as I'm stuck at this point.

My set up is the DNS-323 connected to a Actiontec MI424WR Rev C router. From there my computer uses a wireless connection.

Thanks for your help.

So you are saying that if you turn FTP server off the torrents will start working again? Try it out and let us know although they are two unrelated things.

Sorry for not being clear, I've always had ftp enabled on the 323, but after setting up the the ddns on the router to get the ftp to connect with computers outside my network is when the torrents stopped working. I'm assuming in the automated setup ithe router blocked all ports not related to the ftp. I didn't find anything within the router settings to open up a port, but that's likely because my lack of computer terminology.

Do the following:

  • Disable the ddns on the router.
  • Open the 21 port on the router and forward it to the local ip of the nas (for step by step instructions read page 33 in your router's manual, the paragraph title reads "3.2e Enable Application").
  • Set up the ddns on the nas, instead. (NAS web admin -> Tools -> DDNS)

Should work.

I feel like that was too easy... Everything was exactly like you said except the owners manual for the router was slightly different from the setup on my router, but it gave enough info for me to figure it out. Thanks a ton! Everything works as it should.
