Firmware Update Questions
« on: April 17, 2011, 09:32:30 AM »

Dir 628, 1.22 firmware:

I've been having trouble with my Router to USB connection failing intermittently. Tech support says if I update the Firmware to 1.25, it should fix the problem.

I've also never been able to get my 5g wireless to work. Tech support doesn't seem to know much about this either.

Many of the comments on this forum don't speak well of firmware updates.

I don't have much confidence in D-Link Tech Support. Can anyone enlighten me on this firmware upgrade, and will it create more problems that it fixes???

I would trouble shoot the issue fully until you either resolve the problem or not before updating.
Alot of issues are not related to FW and are end user configuration problems.

I would do a factory reset.
Set static IP addresses on the router for all devices you connect to it.
Ensure the devices are set to auto obtain addressing.
recall when it worked and when it stopped. What have you done since then to change anything?
If nothing, what else has changed?
What is going on with the problem. Give more details?

When it is working, it will work forever, as long as I don't turn the computer off, or put it in sleep mode. Many times when I turn on the computer, it works, but many times it doesn't either.

I've made no changes to the router settings since the day I set it up. It's all about the router just flat out losing communications with whatever USB device I have plugged into it, ie a printer, jump drive or portable HD. When this happens, Shareport activates as it should, but the link to the USB device is apparently open, as I don't get the customary USB connect tones.

In order to get it working again, I have to power down the router. It then starts working again.

D-Link Tech Support seems to think the solution to every problem is to reset the router to factory defaults or upgrade the firmware. This is BS. Everytime you do that, you have issues with settings, passwords on Wifi, etc. Hopefully someone out there has solved this issue.......I've seen many posts talking about exactly this issue.

First, any firmware 1.24 of greater will remove the "SecureSpot" functions.  SecureSpot was always "trouble" and D-Link has "discontinued" its support.

As for the loss of Wireless after the laptop "sleeps" would indicate a problem with the laptop's wireless adapter drivers.  Check for updates and / or tweaking tips.

Unfortunately, the Share port functions seems to have never worked on most "lower end" router.  I have never got it to work well on my 615 and the 628.

As for the 5.0Ghz wireless network, the DIR-628 router is a "selectable" band model.  It will only use either 2.4Ghx or 5.0Ghz radio, oen at a time.

Also, to use the 5.0Ghz wireless network, you need to have a 5.0Ghz ready wireless adapter.

Thanks for your feedback. I presently have Firmware version 1.22. It does NOT have Secure Spot.

In regard to the "sleep" mode. I was not referring to a Notebook. The "sleep" mode I'm referring to is on a Vista Home Premium Desktop directly connected to the router.

When the USB function fails, it can be after waking up from "sleep" mode, or after a length of time when the computer is on and running. No pattern, no specific time increments, no special program or application association, nada! When the router gets itself into the fail condition, nothing short of toggling the power will correct the problem. I used the printer as an example only, it fails exactly the same way with a jump drive, portable hard drive, or a printer plugged into the USB port.

I do have a wireless Notebook, and when the router USB function fails, it fails to both.

The 5gz band not being simultaneous with 2.4gz is just another of several disappointments with the D-Link
product.

Any chance of you connecting the printer to a PC and share it out that way and see how it works?

Is the Vista PC the only one that has this issue?

Do any devices fail to connect to the router with out anything installed in the USB port of the router?  Or only when something is connected to the USB port?

As for simultaneous 5 and 2.4Ghz on this router, this router is designed as a non simultaneous WiFi. This router was designed for it's intended use. Research and forethought is key when looking for products. I would not be disappointed in DLink for this router as they do have other products that do simultaneous WiFi.

The components work fine when plugged into USB ports on the computers. I can use the Windows Networking to share the printer. I have done so in the past, but that method is cumbersome due to the fact that the host computer must be turned on all of the time.

A good part of the reason I bought the DIR 628 was for the USB function. There are more USB-Router applications coming on the market every day.

My take on the D-Link 628 is that if the USB function will never work properly, I would have been better off buying a standard $35 N router with 2.4gz capabilites only, and put the rest of the money into a print server.

Have you called Dlink support and asked for help from them?
If you can't seem to get this going then updating FW is probably the next line of action for you to try.
