Seagate HDD have bug in my DNS321
« on: January 24, 2009, 05:32:00 AM »

I have two Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 model ST3500320AS 500GB drives in my DNS-321.  Seagate has announced a bug in the firmware (Ref: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931). The firmware is downloaded in ISO format in order to burn a bootable CD. My question is how to get it onto the drives mounted in the DNS-321?

Backup your data, remove the drives - install them in a PC, boot from the CD & flash the drives (one by one) and then reinstall them in the NAS.

Chances are you will not lose data, but I would back it up, just to be safe.

Thanks fordem. Unfortunately my only computer is a laptop. I suppose there might be some kind of extenal adapter to connect from some port of laptop to SATA drive?

There are inexpensive USB to SATA adapters - but - I don't know if they will work with the Seagate utility.

Good point. Maybe that's a question for Seagate?

Also, does the DNS-321 format the drive in a way that is accessible via such an adapter?

I just flashed mine in another machine after taking them out of the DNS-321.  No data loss.  Just have the CD drive and one Seagate at a time be the only mass storage devices in use.  A USB to SATA interface won't work I'm guessing and wouldn't want to risk the data to try it.  Just borrow a friend's PC that has SATA and reflash the drives on it from the CD ISO that Seagate has.

So, to answer the question - you can reflash the drives in a PC and it won't erase them and doesn't care what is on them as it boots from a CD they give you that does all the magic.

BTW, mine were the 500GB w/ the 32MB cache.
