Slow network connection + iTunes issue + QoS issue
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:01:08 AM »

Hello everyone

I just bought a DIR 615 (firmware 4.0) which I am using as an access point linked to a Netopia router. The Netopia has QoS enabled and needs to keep it, however I was hoping to use the DIR615 without QoS. I am using a ReadyNas Duo as storage for music, videos etc..

Now, here are my issues which I think are all linked.

1) I have a very slow connection wireless, between 1'500 and 2'000kbits/sec dowload. This was not the case with my very old Linksys router

2) When I try to rip a CD from iTunes to the NAS, it brings up error messages of lost connection and impossibility to rip in the middle of the songs. I did not have that problem with the Linksys router neither.

3) I would like to change the QoS parameters to see how it affects this connection issue, as well as change other Wifi parameters, but they show up as greyed out and I can't change them. (I feel that the DIR 615 might inherit some parameters from the main router, since it is used as an Access Point).

Would any of you have some information to help me?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Do you have DSL or Cable ISP service? If DSL, it's preferred to bridge the DSL modem if it has a built in router and turn off all QoS on the DSL modem and use the features of the 615 router. Having 2 routers on the same network will cause connection issues.

Now, here are my issues which I think are all linked.

1) I have a very slow connection wireless, between 1'500 and 2'000kbits/sec dowload. This was not the case with my very old Linksys router
What wireless modes are you running? Try changing from Mixed to single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have any N supported devices.
2) When I try to rip a CD from iTunes to the NAS, it brings up error messages of lost connection and impossibility to rip in the middle of the songs. I did not have that problem with the Linksys router neither.
How is the NAS connected. How is the PC connected to the router? I recommend using a switch connected to the router and PC and NAS connected to the switch when using these configurations.
3) I would like to change the QoS parameters to see how it affects this connection issue, as well as change other Wifi parameters, but they show up as greyed out and I can't change them. (I feel that the DIR 615 might inherit some parameters from the main router, since it is used as an Access Point).

Hi,

I have DSL which is connected to the modem/router from the provider. I unfortunately have to leave QoS switched on since the DSL provider is also the TV provider (Swisscom TV) and required QoS to work fine.  I have however parametered the 615 to be access point only, would that not serve the purpose and transform it into a "switch"?

I am running on 802.11b/g/n due to various wifi items on the network with various ancienty. Will try to change the parameter as you propose, thanks!

NAS is connected via LAN cable to the 615, the computer (the one used for iTunes ripping) is also connected by LAN Cable to the 615.

I am strating to think I might not have the latest firmware... My DIR 615 is a D3 version, with firmware 4.00. I read in the forum some people have later versions, however when checking for updates through the web-access to the router, it tells me this is the latest available version.

Also, when checking for firmware on the dlink website, I cannot find a version D3, only B, C and E.

Could anyone tell me where to find upgrades to the 4.00 version?

Thanks again!

Upgrading your FW might not fix your issue as this seems to be a configuration issue between 3 different problems your experiencing.

I believe the D hardware version is a NON U.S. unit. You'll need to contact DLink for your region where you are located to find the correct FW update version.
