How to play movies w. subtitles from DNS-323 without PC
« on: May 11, 2011, 04:00:34 AM »

Hi guys,
Sorry to bother you with this but I need solution.
So this is the case:
I stream a lot of mkv and avi files from internet and then playing them together with .srt (subtitle) files that are saved in same place as video file under the same name.
That worked just fine when a PC is involved but also annoying for some reasons (that I would like to skip it for now).
So I bought DNS-323 that works perfectly, stream videos through Bittorent have a good UPnP.....
Works very fast with my LG LE5500 TV through dlna (no PC needed) ;D
Problem is that it does not play subtitles together with video files. And that's why it is not useful to me.
I tried with Twonky... same thing.
I borrowed some Samsung Blu-ray player and thought that maybe this how I will be able to "see" subtitles but nothing again.
Does anyone have idea how to achieve that (without "burning" subtitles into the video file and without use of PC).
So just DLNA certified TV ----> Router -----> DNS-323.
Any help is welcome, and please ask questions if you need more information to help me solve my case.
Using 1.09 Firmware. Would 1.10 beta help?

You can try adding the subtitles to the mkv file.

... Some more permanent solution maybe. This doesn't looks user-friendly :).
I don't understand why dns-323's dlna does not send cooperate with other dlna devices.

I have a Samsung BD-P3600 that streams via Cifs/SMB from the DNS-323, NO UPNP server running, and I have to extract the subtitles from the MKV container and put them in .srt format in the same dir and <same name>.srt. So maybe the subtitle file is not the correct format?

My WDTV plays MKV with embedded subtitles, but not the Samsung Bluray player.

If what you said is truth, that would be a acceptable solution for me.
Today I will borrow my friend's LG Blu-ray with cifs possibility and found out if it will support subtitles (.srt).
If it works I will buy myself LG BD670 Blu-ray player.
@Eclipsed7 thank you for tip.
Will keep you informed....

No problems. When I get a new MKV with subtitles I do the following:
1) Extract the .ass subtitle from the MKV using MKVExtract
2) Convert the .ass file to .srt with DSRT subtitle editor.
3) Run the MKV file thru MKVmerge to allow me to fast forward / rewind the video on the BD-P3600.
4) Rename the .srt to match the name of the MKVmerged file.
5) Watch.

It sounds painful, but with so many MKV not having .srt subtitles, or able to be fast forwarded, this is my solution so I can watch the video.

I don't have problems to find subtitles so I can skip whole this part.
In short... as I said yesterday I borrowed one LG home cinema from a friend with Cifs/SMB possibilities.
It seems to fix my problem.
I can see my DNS-323 and play movies with subtitles. I had problem with one mkv which player didn't want to start but it was no problem with other 2-3. I didn’t have enough time to test it little bit thoroughly but will try to do it today.

Officially and as stated in the dlink's product web page the dns-323 media server does not support streaming of subtitles. Firmware 1.10 -still in beta, may overcome this limitation.

I installed 1.10 beta but it was the same (considering subtitles). I have no illusion that this will change.
But let's go back to way to do it.
If someone wants to include PC in this "Circle" over DLNA it is possible but I would recommend this only wired (not wireless).
Best solution for me (I'm trying to avoid use of PC because this complicate things and DLNA software still have problems with subtitles and refreshing) is to buy one of newer Blu-ray players with Cifs/SMB possibility.
Some .mkv files didn't work and I don't know the reason but I believe it is because I have used older type of BR player. Subtitles worked great, speed was fine I was satisfied.
