Connecting to NAS DIR-323
« on: March 27, 2011, 07:52:52 AM »

Any hints on getting the 825 that the NAS device is plugged in?

When I connect the NAS 323 it is not recognized and Easy search utility that comes with the 323 cannot find it. Lights on the router for that port do not light up either. Worked fine with my old linksys.

I was going to start to maybe try to answer your query earlier as I also own a DNS-323 NAS and it was connecting fine when I first set it up. I don't leave it on all the time though and I hadn't tried to use it since I finally got my DIR-825 Router upgraded to firmware 2.05NA. I had tried 2.03 and 2.05 when they came out but found they limited my upload speed by default to 1MB for some reason. I didn't know about the setting until recently that would fix it because D-Link support never knew what to tell me what to check. They had me jumping thru hoops and not pointing me in the right direction. I have a thread started about their lack of knowledge of their own hardware and software as it pertains to the upload speed issue.

After reading your post, I started to offer you things to check but then thought about the fact that I hadn't turned on my DNS-323 NAS since getting the 2.05NA firmware for the DIR-825 Router to work for me as far as my upload speed issue. I turned on the NAS. The Easy Search Utility wouldn't find the NAS. I reset the router to factory defaults and it would see the NAS but it wouldn't connect to it and map the drives. Eventually it wouldn't see it at all without rebooting the NAS. It never would connect. I flashed the DIR-825 back to 2.02NA and guess what, no problem connecting to the NAS and mapping the drives.

D-Link is a waste of time at this point. Unless you FULLY understand what every last setting should be set at to get something to work that D-Link broke with their last 2 firmware updates then you are stuck Googling your butt off looking somewhere else for an answer. Their support in this forum is NON-EXISTANT. Their support ticket is a waste of time because the people answering you have no clue as to what to do. Like I said, you have to FULLY know and understand the effects of EVERY setting for the DIR-825 in order to have your network function because D-Link has screwed up things that use to work as it was by default when using 2.02NA.

If you are using 2.03NA or 2.05NA, I would suggest downloading 2.02NA and flashing that on your router. I bet it fixes your issue with connecting to your NAS. Do me and everyone else a favor. If you do flash back to 2.02NA and it fixes the problem, PLEASE post back here in this thread so D-Link maybe will see it and quit making excuses that their firmware isn't the problem.

All the above suggestions is if you are using the North American version of the DIR-825. That is what the "NA" stands for. It also must be hardware version B1. The hardware version will be shown on the bottom of the router in the lower left corner of the info tag. Again, PLEASE post back if you do this and it fixes the problem.

Sorry to take so long to reply.

I tried changing the firmware to 2.02 however that did not work so I went back to the 2.05. Then I phoned up DLink and we worked through a rest of the 323 and connecting to 825. Still no LAN activity. We did a direct connect to the PC but no LAN activity and could not see the 323. (I think we should have used a cross wired cable for this but he said it would not matter). We then reset the 323 to default factory settings. Still no LAN activity. He then said as the 323 was more than a year old they could not do anything more. He was quite polite and we spent about an hour on it.

I can still connect my Linksys router and it sees the 323 right away so I am convinced it is some of the settings, but I only know enough about networking to be dangerous.

When I connect to the 323 through the Linksys the settings are:

Firmware 1.09
IP 192.168.1.200
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DHCP enabled

Linksys WRT54G  Firmware 1.02.8
IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Starting IP 192.168.1.200
DHCP enabled

DLINK 825 Router H/W rev B1 Firmware 2.05 1&2
IP 192.168.0.1
Enable DHCP
IP 192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.10

By being able to connect to the Linksys it shows me that the cable is not the problem.

We also tried to connect the 323 to the 825 and then do a reset without success. The light does not come on the router showing any LAN connection.

Could I put a static IP on the DNS and then add a static IP on the 825? Where do you add static IP on the 825?

Thanks for your help

No problem on the reply timeframe. I check this DIR-825 forum, the DNS-323 NAS forum, and the SharePort forum every so often to see if anyone is offering answers to D-Link hardware and software problems. D-Link isn't any help.

I'm surprised it didn't work but when dealing with hardware with firmware issues, it doesn't always work the same for all people.

Here may be another suggestion. I was having a problem getting the SharePort Utility to connect my hardwired desktop PC to the USB printer I had plugged into the DIR-825. It worked for a little while when I first set it up but then just quit one day. What was strange was that my wife's laptop, connected wirelessly, still connected fine. I contacted D-Link support and they never even replied.

I sat and thought about what could be the difference between the 2 computers that let one work and not the other. It was the way I connected. I then wondered what could have gone wrong on my desktop. The only thing I could consider was the driver for my Ethernet ports(I have 2). I uninstalled the ethernet devices in the Device Manager. I then installed the original device drivers from my Mobo disc because the original drivers had been updated via Windows Update. After doing this, as soon as the drivers finished installing the printer popped up as a device connected using the SharePort Utility(as it was running in the background). I've been printing since. I even let it reinstall the drivers from Windows Update and it still kept working. I guess the first Windows Update driver install was corrupted in some way. I had no problem connecting to the internet so it never occured to me that there could be a problem that effected just the interaction with the SharePort Utility.

I will consider this possibility as far as drivers go for other issues in the future. Hope you can figure your issue out.

I own both devices. The search utility really do not work. What i did, is updated both to latest firmware and reserved 1 ip for the nas. I use windows 7 and map the drive as network drive within windows. No problem at all.
