Playing 25GB blurays over wifi-n from DNS-320 possible?
« on: June 12, 2011, 10:04:28 AM »

Hi,
I'm new to NAS in my home network.  I bought a DNS-320 and thought it would be great to put all of my blurays on it and stream them throughout the house wirelessly over 802.11n.

I thought the speeds would have been fast enough, wifi-n theoretically is 300Mbps and the actual connection is around ~110Mbps.  But when I save files direct to the NAS, I only get speeds around 4MBps write (does RAID1 causes this to be half of what it should be?).  On reads, I'm getting around 5-6MBps.

If I connect wired via 1,000Mbps gigabit ethernet, I get write speeds of ~25-30MBps max.

My questions are:
1). Was I too ambitious thinking I could stream 25GB blurays throughout my wifi-n network?
2). Do I have something slowing down my network?  My router is gigabit capable and wifi-n wireless.  I have the DNS-320 on a gigabit wired line.  My laptop is wifi-n and from what I've read the ~110Mbps is normal for wifi-n.

Don't believe all you read about WiFi 'n', there are a lot of things that can, and do, slow wireless down.

Now a question.  Have you tried to stream the content over your network and if so what are the results?  Many people look at 'speed over network' figures and cry 'oh woe it's not doing what I think it should', when they should be concentrating on 'will it do the job'.

It may take a time to load files to the NAS but streaming works without problems, after all, as long as the player has something to play speed over the network doesn't enter into it.

The movies will start, but stutter so bad that they area unwatchable.

I can play 5GB DVD's just fine.
