Using as print server only? Also, Windows 7 issues...
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:00:32 AM »

I bought this NAS and my hard drives have not arrived yet. I wanted to test it out so I plugged it in, updated to the beta firmware, and tried to get the printer working. I can see that the printer shows up on the admin page, but I'm having awful issues with Windows 7. The first time I plugged it in, I saw it in the network drop down next to my computer, but since then it's never come up. I can ping the IP, but every time I try \\(ip address) in an explorer bar, it thinks for a while and then gives me just a very generic error. I have Windows 7 Ultimate I think. I reset the router to factory settings and tweaked some windows settings to try some things on this forum but nothing worked.

I noticed that one "fix" is to name the user after your windows username. My windows Username is long and has spaces in it - do I just take the spaces out and let it truncate? On the other hand, at the beginning I remember seeing log messages that were denying my windows user, and now i don't see any log messages for people trying to log in at all.

Is the device not supposed to work at all with no drives? I just want to test to see if it works. I may have to return it if it is this hard to get connected. I bought it because it looked like a reasonably good cross platform NAS. I haven't tried on Mac or Linux yet.
