« on: October 15, 2010, 11:48:12 AM »

Hey all,

I have "Mac filtering on and to only ALLOW the addresses below" however, it allows any computer, even if i do not have them listed, anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

jrocca ...

D-Link DIR-601 version 1.01NA , Fri, 29 Jan 2010

I'm setting up a 601 as a "Wireless Access Point" on an existing wired network (LinkSys BEFSX41 router).  I got it basically working yesterday, though it took a whole day to climb the learning curve.  I am quite a NEWBIE in wireless, and I only got into this because my daughter (1000 miles away) gave me an iPod Touch 4G for my birthday/Father's Day so that I can FaceTime with my 3 year old granddaughter!!!  My only "security" measure for my new wireless net was to set the Transmitter Power to "Low" (LOL) ... how's THAT for hi tech!

So now I'm trying to beef up the security.  Since the iPod is the only device on the wireless network, I decided to try setting the mac filters.  I put in the iPod mac address, and immediately when I saved it, I couldn't get into the router with the host system I was using for the console.  Duuuh ... I figured I had to ALSO put in the address of the host system as well.  So, I went through the whole reconfiguration again, and this time I put in both the host and the iPod mac addresses, but again, I couldn't get into the Configuration Screen with the host machine.  Yuck!  I hope D-Link says something about the status of mac address filtering, because it is either royally fouled up, or impossible for a normal user to figure out.

Blessings in abundance, all the best, & ENJOY!

Glad you figured it all out. Ya it's a learning curve but you'll get there, it's not that hard.

Well, I got mine working !!!  I don't know what I was doing wrong, but was writing a reply to the D-Link support team so I went VERY carefully through the process of setting up "Allowed" MAC Addresses in the filter table, and it worked just fine!  I added the LAN configuration desktop machine and the iPod, and they both worked.  I checked another machine on the LAN and it did NOT work, which was correct.  I added the 2nd LAN machine to the MAC Address table in place of the iPod, and amazingly enough, both of the desktops on the LAN worked fine at opening the 601 configuration screens, and the iPod no longer had internet access.  So then I used the 2nd desktop and added the iPod address to the list, and then it had access to the internet through the 601.  So, it is all working fine now.  A friend is bringing over a WiFi enabled laptop and we are going to try it out for both enabled and disabled conditions.

So, it appears that the MAC filtering is working fine now.  I would suggest typing in the MAC Address entries VERY carefully ... use CAPITAL letters for the hex alpha characters, and make sure you type ":" (colon) characters for separators.  I don't know if that is required, but it worked for me!
