DNS-321 will not recognize 2nd drive (error 112)
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:50:47 PM »

Hello, I have been successfully running 1 drive in standard format on my DNS-321, and this weekend I wanted to add a second drive to also run in standard format (no RAID).  I tried 3 other hard drives and all received the error "Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure (Error Code:112)".

I tried taking the drives and formatting them in Windows and then doing a surface scan; all were good.  I then re-inserted them into the DNS-321 and still got the same error, which occurs around 2%.

I am running the most current firmware (1.03 from October 9, 2009).

Does anyone have any ideas?

Here's a procedure that should resolve your issue:

(1) Remove the working HDD from the DNS-321
(2) Insert the new HDD in the slot that used to contain the working HDD
(3) Format the new HDD
(4) Insert the original working HDD in the free slot

When removing the existing hard drive and reinserting it, I will lose all the data - correct?

Your data should be fine, but to be safe you should maintain a backup of your data when performing procedures like this (and in general).

Hello,

That solution still results in the same problem.  At 3% the "Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure (Error Code:112)." came up.

Any other things you can think of that I can try?

Just to be clear, when you tried to format, the new HDD was located in the slot where the working HDD was previously seated and the other slot was empty (i.e. no HDD)?

Success!  I had to read your response twice and see that the trick was to only have 1 HDD (the one in the working bay) in the unit at once.  The unit formatted to 100% and now I plan on moving it to the other bay and reinserting the old HDD.

Thank you for the help!   ;D
