When I enable the UPnP AV Server Settings and share my Photo, Music & Video directories for my Samsung UN46B8000XF Television the DNS-320 DLNA server doesn’t render photos (.jpg) or music files (.mp3) correctly. It does play videos (.mpg, .mpeg & .wmv) correctly. I called DLink technical support on 15 June (Case #: C04934763) and after 30+ minutes Mark suggested I call Samsung.

When I select a DLNA device, the TV’s Media Play screen displays Photo, Music, Movie and Setup choices. If the DNS-320 is the input server, selecting Photo, Music or Movie displays three new selections all titled Video. The first video folder takes me to three new folders labeled Upper Folder, All Videos and Folders. If I enter Photo or Music via the Media Play screen choices when I navigate to the Photo or Music folder on the DNS-320 no files are displayed. Fortunately, when I enter Movie via the Media Play screen and navigate to the folder where my videos are stored, they are displayed and can be played.

I copied these same three directories to a 1.5 TB USB drive plugged into my ASUS RT-N16 Router and shared them with its DLNA server. I also copied them to a Windows XP computer running the Samsung DLNA software and another computer with Windows 7. In all three cases the photos displayed correctly, the music files displayed and played correctly and of course the movies did as well.

Since I bought the DNS-320 to duplicate the RT-N16 capability plus power down when not in use, gain faster transfer speeds and RAID 1 redundancy it is of little use to me if 2/3 of the DLNA server doesn’t work.

Does anybody have any suggestions to resolve these issues?

UPDATE (17 July 2011):
I never got any further help from D-Link Tech Support. I installed TWONKY media server on the DNS-320. My TV now shows both the DNS-320 DLNA server and the TWONKY server. Photos & Music stored on the DNS-320 still do not work with the DNS-320 DLNA server & my Samsung TV, but the same Photos & Music when played with TWONKY work properly. Videos stored on the DNS-320 work with the DNS-320 DLNA server and/or TWONKY. This pretty strongly suggests to me that the problem I am experiencing results from the the DNS-320 DLNA server implementation.

I'm having the opposite problem. None of my wmv files will be decoded when I try to view them from my PS3. MP4, MPG, AVI and MP3 play fine. My firmware version is 2.0.

Someone correct if I am wrong but the NAS box has nothing to do with encoding or decoding files. This is all done by your TV, PS3 or what ever your trying to use to view media files.

I do have a similar problem with my Xbox360. It won't display video files from my DNS320 in some folders, smart phones work and other windows 7 pc's work. I put it down to a glitch with the Xbox.

Also DNLA TV, bluray players are known to be very flakey with media play back from NAS devices. If you want to play back media in this fashion, then a dedicated media player for your TV is the best option.
