Two different Drives work as JBOD but not RAID 1
« on: July 05, 2010, 08:56:50 AM »

Hi hoping someone can help me out here...

I have a 1TB WD and a 1.5TB Seagate drive and have tested both in the DNS323 as single entity drives. They have both been formatted in the DNS323 but now i want RAID1 setup on it but it fails at 5% stating that the format has failed...

I've already swapped drives, left to right, etc
Powered down
Multiple formating attempts always to fail at the same point.

Any help or advice will be appreciated.

P.S. The Data is already backed up on a USB 1TB drive. I just need RAID configured.

Remove both drives and use the disk manufacturer's diagnostic to zero them and then put them back in and try to configure the raid.

Hi,

I had similar problem installing a 2nd HD: the formatting process failed at 5%. Another friend here in the Forum suggested downgrade to version firmware 1.07 and install the new HDD. It worked for me and right after the formatting process finished OK I reversed the firmware to version 1.08. Hope it work for you also!

Regards!

Thank you all for your recommendations. I am running firmware 1.09 and rolling back was the next option. I was going to roll back to 1.08 but I may have had the same problem. I will roll it back to 1.07 and report back if this resolved my trouble.

If not, I will find and download the mfr HDD software to "zero" them in.

This does not make much sense to me though since they can both be formatted in any other configuration except RAID 1.

For reasons only known to D-Link, if you stick a drive in that has been formatted by Windows or Linux, it confuses their RAID-1 configuration, I saw the same thing the first time I built a raid-1 array.

Good news...Presently the format process is @ 11% and going steady!!!

I will restore my config once the format is complete!!

Man this has been a challenge...

First Chipset fan died overheating my chipset on an ASUS A8N-e
Second Replaced fan dies weeks within installation
Third got the ZALSMAN fan installed with a fan to circulate
Four power supply was failing and abruptly shut down my PC
Five 1GB ethernet connection is now fried!!! :(

At least I will finally have RAID set up and I still have my files!!!

Update....23%
