Poor wifi signal range
« on: July 20, 2011, 06:41:02 PM »

I just got this router about a week ago to replace my DGL-4300.  I thought all was good until my wife started complaining that the laptop drops signal in our bedroom which is down stairs in the front of the house from the router.  I live in a town home so there isn't that much distance to cover with wifi.  the dgl-4300 was able to make it out to my front porch.  I then used wifi analyzer on my android and sure enough the signal drops considerably after 25ft.  I have been reading up on different settings to see if there was a booster built in or something but i cant find anything to make the signal better.  I was hoping someone could help before I RMA this thing.

What FW version is currently loaded?

where do I find this?

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Done

What wireless modes are you using?
2.4GHz Mixed g/n

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
tried both and I have the same result.

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.
WPA2

2 ipads, 2 androids, and a laptop

Any cordless house phones?

My quick suggestion without troubleshooting is buy new antennas or access point that will extend the routers signal to other parts of the house. Have a great day, any further questions just let me know.

I would also try changing channels. Use InSSIDer and see where the other router channels are and use a open channel that there not using.

I'm not sure they make a 20ft antenna extension besides I don't want to have cords trailing down my stairs.  I was looking into the D-Link DAP-1525 Amplifi Wi-Fi Booster to possible fix the range issue but I cant find any reviews on it.  anyone have experience with this or similar products?

I would also try changing channels. Use InSSIDer and see where the other router channels are and use a open channel that there not using.

I tried that 1,6 and 9 were being used by my neighbors so I tested the signal on the other channels. The problem still remains that the signal range just drops off around 25ft.

Are there any walls and such between the router and 25ft? Thats about what I'm getting on mine. There are plenty of walls and such. Is this on single mode G or mixed G and N?

I have it on mixed G and N but I tested it on single G and it had about the same drop off point.
25ft is about how long the loft is upstairs I know what your thinking but my DGL-4300 went about 40ft.  I'm having a hard time believing this router is less powerful.

Well I have noticed that some routers, and others don't get good range any more for some reason. Not sure why. I know old routers like Linksys WRTs and older Dlink got better range. It's possible that some of these routers were scaled back on the power..possibly a marketing thing too. If you think about it, if they had routers that got too range, then some reasons why not to by extenders and relays. I hate marketing sometimes. I know that when I get my house done up, I'm going to have the router and one main DAP unit to extend the range and be done with it. 40ft is a good distance. Might be time for extender or relay man.

Yeah that's kinda what I figured.  I'll be getting the D-Link DAP-1525 Amplifi Wi-Fi Booster.  I'm going to be a guinea pig i guess since there is no reviews.

Let us know man. I'm getting the new DIR-657 router to test. Will see how it goes. Would be interesting to see how the new DAP does.
