Strange Wireless problems
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:06:51 AM »

I have this strange problem with my wireless setup on the DIR-655.
Bought it about six months ago, and never got wireless to work properly.

If I choose WPA2, the clients don't show up in the router website (under wireless)
All wireless clients can connect to the router and access the internet, but not the LAN.
So my laptop cant access shared files on my workstation (and cant even get a ping reply from that IP)
My android phone cant access the media center to be used as a remote control.
I also seem to experience some dropouts where the only real solution is rebooting the router.
I have been playing around with TKIP/AES, WPA/WPA2, but if I get it to work (get contact with LAN, clients showing up in the router website),
it stops working after rebooting the router (the settings are the same as before the reboot)

If I choose WEP, it displays two networks with the same SSID on my android phone and laptops, one WEP and one WPA.
I can use it fine with the win7 laptop and android phone, but on my old winxp laptop and my friends iphones, they only get one network, and are unable to connect to it (access denied, probably wpa network)

Info from the router admin website:
Product Page: DIR-655
Hardware Version: B1
Firmware Version: 2.00

I cant update firmware since it says it already is on the latest version.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.
However I would try WPA first and TPIK only. Then try WPA2 and TPIK only and see what happends. Then try Auto TPIK and AES.

2.03 is latest firmware fo the B models.  Don't use the built in checker, go right out to the dlink site to get it.

If you are using NA firmware, you can download yours from here:

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655_revB/Firmware/

If you are some other region go out to your local DLink site and downlad from there.

davevt31:
It wount take the firmwares I have tried, that includes the NA ones for rev B, and some local for rev A.
I guess this is where I should get them from: ftp://ftp.dlink.no/
but I cant find rev B there.

FurryNutz:
ISP is Telenor ADSL, the modem is a Speedtouch WL780 (modem and wireless router in one)
It is configured in bridge mode, so it shouldn't be a problem.
I have tried fidling with all settings, but it seems to be random if the wlan devices can access the lan.
Often seems to be working if I lock it in wpa1 or 2 and tpik or aes, but only until I reboot the device.

I think the solution must be to get a new firmware on it, but I cant find a firmware version it will take!

B1E... Euro version?
You need the euro firmware then.

Yeah. Where yours says EU before B1E, mine says NA before B1

I only found it on the german site, at 2.01b05
http://www.dlink.de/cs/Satellite?c=Product_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-DE%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319392719&p=1197318958220&packedargs=QuickLinksParentID%3D1197318958220%26locale%3D1195806663795&pagename=DLinkEurope-DE%2FDLWrapper

Get a second opinion though just in case. :P

Edit: there's a place on these forums for the Euro versions. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=175.0
