Optimizing connection with Mac
« on: August 16, 2011, 06:18:59 AM »

I have my Macbook Air (Lion) connecting with my DNS-323 via wifi, and have the connection in my logins for automatically connecting when possible.  I'm noticing some extreme sluggishness for several Mac app (e.g., iTunes) that cannot be explained by wifi speed alone.  For example and in contrast, my Win 7 installation of iTunes shows no such sluggishness.

This could really stem from me still being in the steepest part of the learning curve for MacOS.  Can someone advise me as to the optimization of my MBA's connection with the 323, or point me at a tutorial.

TIA & cheerios from the Avalon Peninsula Newfoundland  :)

you are in for an adventure. if you find some working solution, please let us know, too. meanwhile:

1. wired connection does not help much
2. upgrading cabling from cat5 to cat6 does not help
3. trying different unmanaged switches does not help
4. enabling jumbo frames does not help
5. pinging dns-323 with large packets will fail
6. pinging your mac from dns-323 with large packets works just fine, as expected
7. tcp-ack tweaking on mac does not help
8. switching from samba to nfs does not help
9. just to keep things interesting, upload from mac to dns-323 works absolutely fine

even our ccna instructor was surprised.

I saw a really good deal at local eletronics store so I bought wd mb live and postponed some serious wiresharking.

you are in for an adventure ...

I'm certainly not getting much help from the Mac Lion forum.  However, I have found a couple of remedies for older versions of OS X ... and I wonder if anyone here has any thoughts that would carry over to Lion.  Please see the following:

I gave up time machine on dns-323. for every person who got it working you find two or more who did not. I got it working eventually, but it looked like the system just got tired fighting me. one day it didn't work, the next day I booted my imac up and it worked. go figure. however, it was extremely glitchy from the start. for example, time machine tried to mount backup disk image for every backup and gave 'unable to mount' error even if the image was mounted and accessible. the second thing was that backups were unaccessible, you could browse, but not restore.
