Long story short, I upgraded the firmware to 1.10 beta, but I was having more problems than before - e.g. bit torrent not working properly - so I tried to downgrade to 1.09.
The firmware update seemed to be successful, the unit restarted and I could access the drive.
Then I tried to reset to factory defaults (because I was having problems with performance, weird permission errors and whatever), but after that I can no longer access the unit from the web or from Finder.
I also tried to hook it up to a Windows PC so to use Easy Search but it can't find the unit.
However, if I connect it to the laptop directly, the laptop gets an IP address assigned with DHCP and there seems to be a connection between the two. But again, I can't access the unit from the web interface nor I can see it in Finder; however, a few times I managed to see the web interface login only at http://192.168.0.32, where 192.168.0.32 is the IP I have used with the unit. But after submitting the login form (when I manage to see it..) then everything gets stud and I don't see anything else until the browser, I think, will give up trying to load the page.

Any idea? I've just ordered a WD My Book Live 3TB as I was anyway tired of the 323's ridiculous speed, but I would anyway try to recover this unit and try to use it anyway.

Hello,

make a reset by pressing the button on the rear side during powering it on. Then it comes up with factory settings. As long as you don't play with customized firmwares, you cannot brick the DNS-323. The latest stable lelease is 1.09, the latest beta 1.10b7. If you want to upgrade it with 2 TB hdd's, follow this way:

- flash 1.10b7 firmware
- insert 2 TB hdd and format it with ext3
- copy all your files and make your settings
- reflash to 1.09 final

The 1.10b7 is still a little buggy (loss of network access, non reliable new upnp media server, loss of print server,...), so stay with the 1.09. It is a very reliable firmware and you can reach up to 18 MB/s within a GIGABIT NETWORK!!!

Of course there are newer and faster NASes on the market, but for me the DNS-323 does its job in a good manner and I am satisfied with the network throughput. I was able to flash and use the customized firmware Alt-F from jcard, but you should only play with it until you are sure what you are doing!!!
