Attribute bits not set
« on: August 22, 2011, 10:08:07 PM »

I am new to the DNS-325. When I modify a file on the DNS-325, the archive bit is not being set. How can I have this bit set so that my incremental backup software can property back up the files that have changed?

There is a "map Archive Bit" option when setting up shares but does your backup software really use the Archive bit? That dates back to, er, PDP8, PDP11 and CP/M perhaps.

I would have thought that modern software used a combination of size, date and CRC.

Does the CLI command "touch" still modify the file archive bit?

I have turned on the 'map archive' option and now all of the files show as 'archived on' and I cannot turn the attribute off.

I am using novaback and it uses the archive bit to select files for backup on an incremental or differential basis. I see from the forums that there is a lot of references to other people having problems with the 323 and the archive bit not being able to be set or reset with the attrib command, but those posts were from 4 years ago. Any ideas how to use the archive bit on the system just like windows does for a local drive?
