Update or Not Update, That is the question.
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:42:00 PM »

I hear that if everything is working out of the box that you shouldn't update the firmware. With that said i Received my DGL-4500 Today via TigerDirect($74.97). Everything seems to be working great, so should i update the firmware to 1.23NA? Thanks!

Patrick, I got mine in, too and immediately updated the firmware.  Mine is working fine and I'm typing on it right now.

Furry is not a fan of it, though!

I got one in a couple of months ago, same FW and A2. Runs great. Keep what you go. Get in the frame of mind to trouble shoot first, if you need too. Come to the forums for help before updating FW. A lot of times people just update thinking FW will fix it. Most of time it doesn't. Other issues lye else where that causes problems, not just in FW.  ;) Were here to help.

Just curious, Why shouldn't I update the FW?

There no real need to update unless after all trouble shooting has been exhausted, to update. Yes there were some issues with some of the FW releases however not everyone saw issues with these version. Hence, set up the router and enjoy it as is out of the box first. FW updates have to deal with some fixes in code however mostly it's to fix a defect possibly or add in a new feature. There were no new features added after v1.15 I think. Have to go back and look. Run the router and see how it does, set it up and if your a gamer, check out the stickies. I promise you, you'll enjoy it. I do.

Well so far its good, I was a Linksys geek for years until my WRT54G just decided to die after 5+ years of use. I found this good deal on TD for $74.97. Its sleek and the interface is going to get some use too but I should be able to figure it all out.

Kewl man. Ya I got mine for $82.46 Shipped. Not bad for a $200 router when it first released. I think you'll like it. Keep us posted man. Enjoy.

I have FW 1.21NA with no issues what so ever!  Is there spec sheet that tells you was changed from 1.21NA to 1.23?

I found it, seems the only thing of interest is:
DNS relay issue ( WAN Slowdown )

What exactly was the issue and would I notice if i had issues???

I had noticed that when using v1.21 would randomly hang the router and you'd have to reboot it. Again, only some of the routers exhibited this. Not all. I sold a 2nd A1 router to my buddy this year and bought a new A2 that came loaded with v1.21 and used it for a while and never saw this issue. That router still has 1.21 on it. I'm curious to see what comes on this 3rd one I bought. ;)
