DNS-325 rebooted during backup?
« on: October 04, 2014, 09:39:38 AM »

Hello,

(In another thread, I had reported problems with my NAS. I reformatted and reset all settings, and it's been running well for a month. And now…)

Yesterday, an image backup failed because the NAS was no longer accessible on the network. This morning, I checked out the NAS log and it seemed fine, though short — and then I saw the NAS System Log page was informing me that its uptime was 15 hours.

1) OK, so it seems the NAS rebooted or something. Why would I not see a long string of bootup messages at the top of the log?  I just get my usual long set of

Oct  4 07:44:18 kernel: printk: 47 messages suppressed.
Oct  4 07:44:18 kernel: protocol 0000 is buggy, dev eth0
Oct  4 07:44:19 dnsmasq-dhcp[549]: DHCPINFORM(br0) 192.168.1.101 f0:4d:a2:3a:8b:e0
Oct  4 07:44:19 dnsmasq-dhcp[549]: DHCPACK(br0) 192.168.1.101 f0:4d:a2:3a:8b:e0 Charles-Dell

So did it reboot or not?

2) What are the typical causes of network disappearance of the NAS?

Thanks for your help. When people buy a NAS for backups, it's for peace of mind. A NAS that causes some backups to fail is anything but reassuring.

HI Blaq,
I don't know for sure from what the logs say, but the 15 hrs. uptime seems to indicate that the router either lost power or spontaneously rebooted.  I use a UPS on almost all of my stuff and I highly recommend them as you can protect even several of these low power devices with even a low watt one.  I am in Florida, the lighting strike capital of the world, and I experienced numerous momentary off / on fluctions, causing stuff to reboot until I started using UPS's on almost everything.  This is assuming you have the NAS's power setting set to return to whatever it was when the power possibly glitched.
It is possible your NAS is flakey since you reported other problems before, but this is the only other issue I can think of.

Thanks for your reply, cable2. I live in a downtown condo where the power is very reliable. (I would assume that other devices in my home would show signs of a power glitch or temporary outage.)

What irks me the most is that I buy a NAS from a reputable company, then they turn around and stop supporting the product less than 2 years after my purchase. I could see ending firmware upgrades and such, but completely cutting off support ? What a cold shower.
