SFTP or other way to make FTP safe without SSL
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:47:59 PM »

Hi!
Is there any other way to make the FTP safe than using SSL?
I have a IP-camera that saves pictures every minute to my DNS-320... but to make it work i have to disable SSL... this seems a bit dangerous to me... So is there any other way to make the connection "safer"? or is there any way to just disable the SSL for the account used by the camera?

These are the options out of the box:

FTP even with login/passwd info: No really secure, data is send in clear text
FTP SSL/TSL: Somehow secure, safer than just FTP.

However, you might be able to get SCP or SFTP which are the most secured protocols for file transfers. For this, you will need fonz’s fun_plug. Never done it as I do not have my NAS open to the internet.
