Setup one single HDD and then another one
« on: September 14, 2011, 08:18:17 AM »

Morning,

I just bought a DNS-320. I didn't set it up... yet. I will be using it with a single WD Caviar Green 1TB HDD, however I'm planning in buying a new unit in a couple of months (maybe another WD Caviar Green 1TB HDD, just for mirroring).

I wanted to know if I can make it without many problems and what are your advices concerning this, for example: do I have to use Raid for the single file in advance?

Thanks and sorry if the question is dumb :P

Here's a thread on this subject as applied to the DNS-323: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38321.0
I strongly recommend backing up your data to another physical device prior to performing any form of HDD conversion.

If you have the means, I recommend configuring your RAID 1 array now rather than later. By doing so, you will avoid a future data migration issue and provide immediate redundancy for your data. . . a win-win decision.

Demogar,
I don't know if you already bought your WD Green Drive or not but, if you have not, and have the intention to use it in a Raid setup, you should know that WD specifically recommends these "Green" drive not be used in a Raid array.  I think Dlink also has something to say on the subject adn might not support these drives.  Before you purchase. google "WD TLER PROBLEMS".  I frankly don't understand it completely, but check it out first if you can.
PS.  I am running 2 2TB Samsung drives without problems.  I got them from an "Egg" place.  Good luck.
