DIR-600 access point via laptop connected to WLAN
« on: October 05, 2011, 06:07:49 AM »

As the title might suggest, my network isn't the most optimal at the moment. Starting from the router, it's a Thomson TG789vn my roommate has set up in his room. The service is DSL. I've connected my laptop to said WLAN from which I connect my access point turned DIR-600 to the internet and share it to my PC and Xbox 360.

It works pretty well most of the time with 28 ping to a ~150 miles far server, yet sometimes I lose connection overall, or partly. For example, the Battlefield 3 beta stays connected to the internet while 3 different browsers are unable to load a single page. It seems like ongoing connection are unaffected while new ones don't work. The problem is usually fixed in a few seconds when I disconnect and reconnect the WLAN on my laptop.

So yeah, it's not pretty but I have to work with what's available. I'm actually surprised it even works this well. Any suggestions or insight on how to optimize the whole thing or how to fix the partial lack of connectivity?

Well the way you have it set up isn't probably the best way to game as gaming takes alot of bandwidth and is preferred to use a wired connection. Specially for XBL games.

what wireless modes are you using on the 600 AP?
You can try this, set the wifi mode to Single mode N at 2.4Ghz and see if it helps you maintain speed and connections.

It's preferred to have the DSL modem in bridged mode and have the 600 router do all the routing and traffic handling.

Doesn't the access point mode on 600 have a preset of settings since checking the ap mode and saving settings brings up the configuring window after which you can't access router settings until you reset the router?

Regardless, I forgot to mention that I've connected the laptop<->dir-600 and dir-600<->pc&xbox wired, rj45's all around, save for the cable between the router and the laptop, that might be a CAT5(relevant?). I disabled the wireless mode on the 600 before switching to ap mode though.

Regarding the DSL modem, it doesn't support bridging, but I turned off the firewall on the Thomson, could that help with stability?

You can access the 600 in AP mode if you can find out what the IP address its getting from the host router. I have my spare DGL-4500 set up in AP mode and it gets a specific address from my DIr-825. I can use the specified IP address to log into the 4500 while in AP mode.

Ok, if your wired all around then you should be ok for gaming. I would check out some CAT6 cabling as it's cheap now days. Be aware that some inbox cables that come with modems and routers are not the best sometimes.

seems like your using the 600 routers as a switch more than a AP. I will work too. However if your letting the DSL modem and router handle most of the traffic management, it might be best to use a network switch instead of a router made into an AP. There are still some processing that is uneccesary going on the 600 router. Also if you can get on the 600 web page, turn off it's firewall settings, QoS engine, wish and most everything that is not needed aside the IP address for the router and gateway. Other than those 2 times, it should work ok. For gaming though, I would recommend using a network switch instead of the AP router while your using the DSL modem has the host router.

Does the DSL modem router have a DMZ? If you find the IP address of the 600, put that in the DMZ on the DSL modem router and see how it goes.

It's too bad the DSL modem doesn't support bridging, usually they do. You would be good if you could bridge the modem and get yourself a DGL-4500 router.  ;D

Having tried every ip the host router shows including unknown devices I still can't seem to access the 600. I'll try and see to that myself. Might be a difference in models or i'm still doing something wrong ;D

As for the other advice, a switch is indeed what i'm aiming for. The DSL modem however doesn't support DMZ either. It's a pretty poor modem in terms of configuration overall, got it for free from the ISP. I would buy a proper modem and a network switch, but my student budget won't allow anything like that for this year so I have to make the best of what's available. I'll see to the settings you mentioned and try get some better cables.

Regardless, thanks for your help thus far :)

Ok understand man.

One thing you can do is ask the ISP if they have a better modem/router available. Usually ISP hand out low budget ones if you don't ask for something better.

One thing you an try on the 600 router is to set it back to factory and manually configure the router if you can figure out what IP address that the modem is giving, say if you know the address pool is 192.168.0.#...Manually set the 600 routers IP address to something specific, like 192.168.0.50. Write this number down. Before you do this, go thru all the settings on the router and turn them OFF, like SPI and QoS, WISH and if your not going to use the WiFi, turn that off however you could use it. Then set up routers new IP address, gateway and turn off DHCP. After it reboots, you should be able to connect to the new IP address you set for the routers IP address.

A switch is probably going to be the best thing for you until you can get better Internet modem or router setup.

Good luck.
