I've configured my 655 and I can access the internet through it.

Network cable from PC goes to the DLINK, DLINK to the DSL modem, DSL modem to the big scary internet. This all works great. Now for the Wi Fi...

I've set up the Wi Fi on the 655 and can both see and connect to my newly configured home network from my laptop, but I can not access the internet from the laptop. I believe it is some sort of gateway problem but I'm not sure how to diagnose or fix the problem.

Any and all help appreciated.

First trying disabling any security on the router and seeing if you can get online then. If so, then probably either you typed the passphrase in wrong or their is some sort of compatibility between the type of security your using and what your laptop can do. If you can't get online then, connect a ethernet from laptop to router and see if you can get online. If you can, could be a IP conflict, if you cant, your 655 may be in bridge mode or something and your PC is taking the IP. Try turning off the desktop, rebooting modem, and then rebooting the laptop and see if you can get online.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Some other things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

urn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
