remote device wont accept connection
« on: November 01, 2011, 08:21:20 AM »

I get this message in response to clicking on "Diagnose Connection Problems" which was returned to me in I.E. 9 after visiting yahoo.com, other sites and most interestingly, even after trying to get to my DIR-825 at IP address 192.68.0.1.  The only common element here is the DIR-825 so I suspect there may be some kind of misconfiguration in the device.  The only way that I have been able to clear this condition is to reboot or repower my DIR-825.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

What HW version is your router? A1

What FW version is currently loaded? 1.13NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable (Time Warner Cable)

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Standalone

What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Motorola Surfboard SB5101

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems. No built-in router with this modem; hence no issue here.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.  It appears that the IP addresses that I find in the Status/Device Info/WAN section are not appearing in the Setup/Internet/Manual section.  Do I need to manually add these IP addresses in the Setup/Internet/Manual section?

Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. QoS is not enabled (i.e. already inactive)

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual. Advanced DNS is already disabled.

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. DNS Relay is already enabled.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Already set up this way

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. Already set up this way

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Already set up this way

What wireless modes are you using? On 2.4 GHz, I use mixed G and N to accomodate my devices. On 5 GHz I use N only.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? I meet this requirement based on my response above

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. On 2.4 Ghz, I use WPA-Personal, Auto (WPA or WPA2) and AES, with, WEP for guest zone.  On 5 GHz I use WPA-Personal, WPA2 only and AES, with, WEP for guest zone.

Yes.

I would also clear out the browser cache as well. Doe this happen using a different browser? Try Opera or FF?

OK...  I've manually added those DNS Server IP addresses in the Setup/Internet/Manual section, cleared the browser cache and will monitor things for the next several days.  Thanks!

Other than I.E., I've used Google Chrome but that's about it.  Google Chrome exhibited similar performance issues.

As an aside, I read somewhere that enabling Advanced DNS Services makes the browsing experience a little faster and definitely more secure.  Is there a reason why I should not enable this feature on the DIR-825?

Keep us posted. Have seem some reliability and connection issues with ADNS, specially for gaming and remote connection applications. It's preferred to use ISP DNS.

After filling in my DNS Server IP addresses, my I.E. performance seems to have improved significantly.  I'll keep monitoring but I believe this was the root cause of my problems.

Also, I'll heed your warning about Advanced DNS and not enable it on my DIR-825.

Thanks a bunch for your help!

Ok, keep us posted. Hope you enjoy. I know I do. It's a great router.
