DIR-645 and JetDirect box - cannot print
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:11:50 AM »

I have a DIR-645 router which is working fine for both our wired desktops and wireless laptops, but I can't print. My HP 1320 (Q5927A) printer is not wireless but has a USB connection. With my old non-wireless router (Cisco) I had the printer connected to an HP JetDirect en3700 print box and everything worked fine (the USB cable from the printer connected to the JetDirect box and the JetDirect box connected to the network via an ethernet connection). Thinking that perhaps the D-Link router didn't like the JetDirect box I disconnected the box and plugged the printer directly into the USB connection on the DIR-645. After several escalated calls to D-link because it still wasn't printing I was told to install SharePort Utility on my desktop, it still didn't work. Eventually they said to turn the Windows Firewall on my desktop. After playing around with the port settings the printer finally printed. Problem is they are now telling me that everytime someone boots their machine that they need to run the SharePort Utility, after printing they need to disconnect from the Utility so that others can print. This is not practical - connecting and disconnecting from the Utility whenever someone needs to print makes no sense. So now, what I am wondering if the Windows Firewall may have been the problem all along. I have now reconnected my printer exactly as it was originally going through the JetDirect box and have turned off the Windows Firewall, but again it won't print. I really don't want to have to go purchase a new printer when the printer is otherwise working just fine. Please help! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Some things to try:
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What OS platform are you using?
What model JD box do you have?
After setting up the jetdirect box, make sure your reserving the IP address for the Jet Direct box on the router. Any new IP addresses that are assigned to the JD box, you need to make sure your printer properties reflect that the correct IP address is being used there as well on the PCs. Under the Ports tab.

I would remove any currently installed printers in windows then reinstall them.
I would also verify that your JD box is working as well, does it have a test page button by chance?

H/W ver: A1
F/W Ver: 1.01 Fri 08 Jul 2011
I am running Windows 7, 64bit
JetDirect box HP3700en - box is working

I have sent the Firewall to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall and enabled uPnP and Multi-cast Streeaming under Advanced/Networking.

I am  not sure how I set the DNCP reserved IP addresses or set to auto obtain an IP address. Under Add DHCP Reservation my printer is not in the list of computer names. When I try to Add it manually I am not sure of the IP address the box is using. I tried the two I thought it may be but when I try to save it says invalid computer name.

You need to reserve the IP address of the JD box on the router, not the printer.

Is the JD box IP address being listed in the Dynamic Clients list?
I would do a test page from the JD box and see what IP address its getting from the router. You can also see if it's listed under Status/Device Info/Lan Computers. If it's listed here then you can copy and paste the MAC address into the Add Reservation section, input the same IP address, give it a name so you know what it is, ie JetDirect3700 then add the reservation, Save Settings then reboot the Router and JetDirect box.

Let us know if you need more help. Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

The JD box IP is not listed in the Dynamic Clients list.
I can't do a test page from the JD box because it is just a box. It is not listed under Status/Device Info/Lan Comptuers.

I believe I do need more help. How do I use teamviewer?

BTW, thanks for your help,

I have installed Teamviewer. How do I use this and ensure the correct person is accessing my machine?

Send me a PM here in the forums with the ID and PW for the remote user and I'll help you. Please be wire connected to the router.

Re: DIR-645 and JetDirect box - cannot print (RESOLVED)

We reset the JD box since it was set up for 1.105, and gave it a reserved IP address on the router, removed the printer ports and reinstalled the ports to .0.105 and all PCs were printing well.

Hi FunnyNutz,

I just wanted to say a great big thank you. Not only for your assistance but also for your patience. This problem was beyond my scope and I coulnd't have resolved it without the assistance of someone knowledgeable like yourself. You not only had a good knowledge but were able to communicate so that I could understand what you were doing and what you needed me to do. I called D-Link support twice last night and they tried escalating my call to higher levels but it was quickly apparent that the support technicians I was dealing with had no understanding of what a JetDirect box was. My problem is now resolved and all of our devices can print again, through the network, and using the JetDirect box. I am so gratful for your help. Many thanks,
