Problem Using Vista 64 Backup
« on: April 11, 2009, 09:09:55 AM »

Hi All,

I just picked up the DNS-321, put the latest firmware and Vista64 drivers on the respective hardware, but I still can't use the native Windows backup utility (WBU).  Every time I try to connect to \\NAS\backup in WBU using the "backup" user I created on the 321 (with R/W perms) I get a windows dialog stating "The network share could not be accessed for the following reason: You need Full Controll permissions for the network share. Make the user a co-owner of the share with Full Control. {...} (Ox8100002A)"

I can map the network drive successfully, read/write/delete files no problem.  It is only when I try to use windows backup that I get an error.  The odd thing is that when WBU is checking the share, it creates one of those funky-named directories on the share, but then errors out.

I've found sites about getting into the Linux OS on this thing, but I'd rather not go to that level hacking to just to get a backup to work, and I'd rather use the native windows backup then add yet another piece of background software (DriveClone Pro) that vista will regularly pop a "need admin permissions" dialog for.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Dan, I was in the exact same boat.  Here's how I got mine working.

I've noticed numerous folks with issues connecting Win Vista x64 backup capability to the 321.  I had a bit of trouble early but got it to work.  Once I upgraded to 1.03b6, and set things back to default (button in system settings), went through the initial setup wizard, then created folder in the root directory (I named mine "Backups").  When you go into the Backup utility in Win Vista select the network storage location.  Make sure you point to the 321, but go one step farther and point to the folder you just created to put your backups into.  It will then ask you for your username and password. Enter "EVERYONE" for the username and a password (I used the one I setup to access it via admin, but there are rumors that any 5-8 character password will work).  Hopefully this should quell any "not working with vista backup" reports.
