DLNA User Accounts and misc question about Twonky
« on: November 18, 2011, 12:44:50 PM »

I have two Sony devices that are DLNA compliant and I currently run a session of Twonky and sometimes WMP11 to stream media from my PC.  I just got the 320 and want to transfer my media over to it and make it my media server.

Without Twonky, when I goto browse files on the media players I only want to see the My videos, music, pictures folders on the DNS-320.  I have several other folders that I want to maintain but not viewable on the media streamers.  Is it possible to make only these folders (and its subs) read only to devices that don't have a way to login?  Confused on what user I put their rules on, guest?

Should I want to try and use Twonky again on the DNS-320 -- Reading through other posts I realzie I can no longer use it to transcode but there is a way to get it loaded on the unit.  Since it does not transcode is there really any advantage to have it?  (my files are ogranized by folders the way I like them now).

THANKS!

Hi,
It has been a while since I enabled the media server on the 320, but it is pretty simple as I recall.  Log on to your 320 web GUI.  Then go to application management and go down to UPNP, as this is the media server.  This is all assuming you have the media on the 320 of course.  There are a few problems and issues however, because the 320's firmware unless you install the latest 2.02 beta does not support the correct alphanumeric folder/ file structure, i.e., you will end up with a random bunch of folders with random files within.  If you enable the UPNP function, you will get to select which folders you want to share, and I believe no user settings are available / necessary.  You would access the other restricted folders via your network shares and you can select whatever user settings you would like there.  If the folders you do not want to share are not subfolders of the ones you do, you are OK.  The 320 does not transcode anything so if the files you want to play are not supported by SONY, you will either have to convert to a supported one or no play, and SONY is known to be picky.
The one known downside about the beta firmware is that it is not down gradable and I would not count on it or any future firmware to be down gradable.  They don't tell you this, and unless you would research it on the forums, but on the other hand, I think the latest 2.02 firmware is better than the stock 2.00.  Not sure if I covered what you wanted.  Good luck.
PS. You could just try enabling the media server in the stock firmware to test if the various file types are supported by the SONY devices, if they are then it should be no problem with the beta firmware.  Other options, convert media, go the install TWONKY / fun_plug route.

Thank you, I will work on it tonight.  Did not realize playing with the emulator that once I enable UPnP that I can then pick folders for it.  Appreciate the info!!!

I will see how annoying the random order of media is for me with the stock Firmware.  I will definitely try the tip of the firmware upgrade if I dont like it.  Just bought it last night and have not inserted my drive, thus I do not know what firmware is in it, assuming I am at least 2.0.  Sure a beta would not be installed.

I have an external hard drive I have directly plugged into my Sony BD player/DLNA device.  I can play most all of my media without getting the "file format not supported" error directly from there so I am hoping and assuming the same media will stream from the DNS-320.  We will see.  Adding the second media player is where the true server is becomming more important to me.  Before most of the kids stuff was on the local hard drive at the BD and we were streaming the adult stuff from the PC (no not that kind of adult).  I have been fortunate both my BD and Sony media player both support a lot of different media formats (newer, both bought within last 6 months).  Nothing like the WD or O'play but pretty good.

So back to one question about Twonky, if I dont like the organization of the files Twonky could help.  If I go through the procedures to get it to work based on stuff I have seen on the net and this forum, can I still access the stock utilities from D-Link so I can make future configuration changes?  Wasnt sure if it just likes takes over the system.

Thanks again!

Hi again,
The randomness is a problem if you have a lot of media, trust me.  Other possible problems, the external sub drive.  When I had one installed on my 320, and had enabled FTP, I found I could not restrict access, and it was wide open on my ftp site.  I could not figure out if I could find a way to set User accounts on it, as it would allow this in the User / Group settings.  This may have been my ignorance, but, I decided just to remove it and installed larger drives in my NAS.  Also, I could not get the media on the USB drive to be accessible via the UPNP / media server only via network shares.  There may be a way but I gave up.
Installing TWONKY is not supported by either D-Link or TWONKY as I am pretty sure TWONKY, has pulled support for installing on any NAS.  If you have found good instructions, proceed with caution, same with fun_plug as I am not sure of the impact on your Warrantee if something goes south.   I am not sure about the Utilities etc, but my guess is they will not be affected at all.  Good luck
