can not restart/reboot DNS-323. shutdown works though.
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:55:14 AM »

I have an issue with a DNS-323 (fw 1.08; RAID1). The device works perfectly except that I can not RESTART (reboot ) the system. When restarting from the web interface the DNS-323 will actually bring down the system (no ping, no connection) but the hardware will not restart. The blue lights never flash as in a shutdown, and the hardware will get very hot and unresponsive. The only way I can restart is by pulling the plug. SHUTDOWN from the web interface works fine though.

The biggest problem with that is, that I can not do a firmware update or reset to factory settings properly because it involves a restart/reboot.

Anyone can help me or had a similar issue? I really want to update to the latest fw but I am afraid I will break my DNS-323 because it won't restart during fw update. thx in advance.  ???

I would save the configuration settings to a file, then reset to defaults and/or use the pin reset button. See if that fixes your restart issue then update the firmware.

Ok, I did that. I actually tried the soft and the hard reset and tried setting up a new raid as well. It did not help at all. the unit will not reboot.

The fw update is actually working. but i have to unplug the unit after the upgrade because it won't boot. When starting up the device afterwards, I can see the new firmware version in the web interface.

I am starting to believe it is actually a hardware fault. Could a faulty relay or something else lead to this kind of problem?

You could pull the drives out (with power off of course) and trying a reboot to see if it is disk related.

no not disk related. I removed both drives, it just won't reboot.

When the unit did start, did the fan always start?

When I start the device, the fan does not start immediately but after about 10 seconds. It then spins at a low speed for about a minute until the unit is fully booted. I think it has always been like that.

By chance, do you know someone that also owns a DNS-323?  It would be nice to try a different power supply and see what happens.

Sadly I don't know anyone with a DNS-323. Do you think the problem could be a broken power supply?

I will try to get my hands on another power supply, to test it. Thanks a lot dosborne and jhtopping for all the suggestions so far!!

This causes me to suspect a power problem.  I would check the power at the wall outlet, and it that is good I would then check the connections with the power adapter.  If these look good and the unit still does not start, it is either the power adapter or the DNS-323.  Searching the internet can find a replacement adapter for about $50, which is less than a new/used 323 system.  Just my $.02.

Personally, I doubt it is a power issue, but you never know.

Ok just to be clear the power supply is working, which means I can start and use the DNS-323. But your posts got me thinking that it might not be broken completely, but in a strange way produces more or less power/current then it should. I am not an electrician but I know that electronics can behave pretty strange (including motherboards/PCs) when the power supply is not correct. Does anyone know if the restart process involves some kind of hardware based switching?

I'm not an electronics experfect, but I would imagine there is a relay involved somewhere. The fact that the unit becomes unresponsive would seem to indicate logistically it has shut down. I assume this includes the fan, which is software controlled, as you say the unit heats up. Seems as if the hardware power down (last step) is not being performed or is failing, like a failed relay. Likely a mainboard faiult.

Since I run my units 24/7 this wouldn't be an issue for me :)

When you disconnect power, then reconnect it, does the unit power up or do you have to press the power switch?

When plugging the unit in it does not turn on. I have to press the power switch.

Some people might suggest that I should not care about the restart as long as the NAS works. But I am afraid that other errors/issues will occur and that doesn't make me feel to confident about using the device.
