LAN Routing with D-Link DIR-655
« on: September 28, 2009, 06:04:21 AM »

I'm trying to create a route from a VPN ip to the VPN server in my LAN. Anyhow, the DIR-655 does not let me create routing within the LAN (since only the WAN interface option is available). Are there any solutions or workarounds for this?

I have tried with the following firmwares: 1.11, 1.21, 1.30.

I believe the base/reference firmware (and updates) for the DIR-655 is written by Ubicom (chipset manufacturer).  D-Link then brands and tweaks the firmware.  (See the screen shots in the user manual for the SMCWGBR14-N if you don't believe me.)

Anyway, for some reason it appears D-Link "hid" the LAN interface in the drop-down menu for the routing table.

lizzi555 has a webpage showing one way to force LAN here.  For other options, see related topic on Bridge Mode in another thread here.

Although it appears to work (don't know about with VPN), there may be problems with it, and it's not officially supported.

Another possible option:

Assuming your DIR-655 hardware is A1, you could probably go back to the firmware version that supported Bridge Mode, which I think supported LAN in the routing table.  Bridge Mode was added in FW 1.03 and removed in 1.05.  Personally I'd try 1.03.  Older FW is at D-Link's ftp site Click Here.  Don't try this with A2 or later HW.

Some release notes for earlier FW versions here.

Thank you so much for helping me out on this. I have A3 hardware, so I followed the tutorial which went smoothly.

I will try if it works with VPN tomorrow.

I just tried to add a route into my 655's routing table (A3 1.32NA regretfully) and found that I can't do it.  What a great piece of hardware that I can't add a route into a ROUTER.  What really angers me is that the feature WAS there, and they removed it in newer firmware releases.  I used to think this was a great piece of hardware, but just recently upgraded to 1.32NA and now have a lot of problems.  I should have read the forums more before I upgraded.  Thanks DLink.

Why can't you do it ? The little trick described above still works.
I have set up to static LAN routes with my DIR and the latest firmware.

Perhaps you tell us some details ?
Otherwise it's difficult to help.

Problem I am running into is the FireFox plugin "Unhide Fields" does not work with the latest version of FireFox 3.5.5, it simply will not install.  Mozilla doesn't offer older versions, only the newest, so I have to download the 3.0 version from another site, which I don't trust as much.  I appreciate your quick reply and offer to help.  Your feedback about being able to get it working with the newest firmware is inspiring, and hope I can achieve the same results.  I just didn't want to jump through so many hoops to simply add a static route into a router.

Update : I installed FireFox 3.0, installed "Unhide Fields" version 0.2e but when I go into the web config / routing and click "Show Hidden Fields" nothing happens.  I tried "Show hidden Fields" on other websites (Google, Yahoo, Firefox) but nothing happens on those sites either. !FIX! = Skype installed a AddOn in my browser, without my permission, so I un-installed Skype AddOn and tried again, now the Hidden Fields come up.

You can download the old versions from Mozilla if you know where to look.

Remember to run a virus check on the Firefox 3.0x installation file you may find, and that you may need to download the addon manually and do a File->Open in Firefox to install the addon.

The newer thread "LAN-LAN routing problem" describes the same solution.
Thanks, lizzi555, for the solution!
