Inbound ssh tunnels dropped randomly
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:13:13 PM »

Hi,
I am new to this list.  There does not seem to be a DIR-632 forum, and this seems to be the closest.

dir-632 Hardware version 1A  firmware version 1.01NA

I recently acquired a d-link dir-632 wireless router to replace my linksys router began failing.  I configured to the router to mail me it's log periodically.  From what the documentation says and the format of the log entries, there is an embedded Linux under the covers.  I am trying to isolate a problem I have started having since I switched to the new d-link router.

I have a program which maintains an ssh tunnel from my work Linux box to my home Linux box which is hard wired to the router.  The ssh just maintains a set of tunnels between my work box and boxes at home.  This allows me to vnc in through the tunnel to various boxes at home.   About half the time I connect via vnc, the password box comes up and begins drawing the screen and then the whole ssh tunnel is pulled down.  I have not seen anything in the d-link log nor the Linux box logs to indicate what is causing the failure.  If I restart the tunnel from work, I am good for a short time.  This was never a problem with the Linksys router.

1.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for the problem.

2.  Is there documentation on the meanings of the log entries.   For example, in the following extract from the log there a lot of entries just marked "-- MARK --".  Not sure if they are relevant.  I seem to get a fair number of signals even though the router is just idling along.  The message about "Unable to open" is disturbing, but I am hoping further research on this message on my part will  help.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Is this a stock automatic reply? ???
It asks about hardware and software versions, both of which were supplied in the original question.  The response really has nothing to do with the question as I am able to successfully set up the connection and have it running for a while.  It stays up till I hit it with a burst of traffic such as the initial screen load of vnc or an "X" server display back.

Ok,
How about answering some of the other questions as well. We need a bit more information from you on how things are set up to better get an idea so we can better provide you with good feedback and suggestions. Sorry or seemingly being redundant. We are here to help you. Help us help you.

It's possible that the ISP or ISP modem could be dropping some signal as well. If your on cable, I recommend checking the cable line coming in from the poll or box out side. Ensure they are in good condition. I also recommend using few if not none at all TV line splitters. The more you have online the less signal the ISP modem will get.

It's recommended to use DNS relay as this will have the router relay the ISP DNS addresses to your devices. The router handles this very well. This is different from Advanced DNS Service. Just as long as you have DNS addresses filled in under Setup/Internet/manual. ISP DNS is preferred in most cases. I also recommend letting the router handle IP address reservations as the router can handle this very well. I setup all my devices this way so that they will get there own IP address every time and helps on trouble shooting. Also wont break any options and rules you may have set up if you use DHCP.

Keep us posted on how it goes. Hope it works well for you.

Sorry for the previous reply.  I saw that as the list of questions as reply to almost every question
that got asked.

What HW version is your router?  Hardware version 1A
What FW version is currently loaded?  firmware version 1.01NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  Cable through COX.NET (Arizona)
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?  (Motorola Surfboard Modem, Stand alone, no buildin router, always bridging).  The d-link sees the actual external IP.
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?   Motorola Surfboard SB5120
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems. No

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?  - This shows normal, IP good, DNS servers good also.
Turn off QoS options. - They are off
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.   They are off
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.  -  Currently off, I prefere to use the COX provided DNS servers.  I would need a real good reason to turn it on.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. - I use fixed addresses (hard coded) rall the linux servers and several of the Windows machines.  I understand netmasks and default routes well enough to do network administration at work
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. some are fixed addresses
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done

Side note, I havenow gone a day without a failure.  Maybe it was the ISP orother parts of the network."
