Erratic Phone Behavior
« on: February 17, 2009, 03:46:19 PM »

Yesterday we started having problems with our phones (DPH-125MS). During conversations that lasted longer than a few minutes, the connection would be come garbled and then the phone would spontaneously reboot itself. It started with one user in the morning and slowly spread to other users.

The problem did not recur today but we're concerned it might be tied to a deeper issue that needs to be addressed.

The gateway shows no problems on the logs.

Got it. Thanks for the response. We've been trying voice support and they come back over and over to our DHCP server. We're working to stage a 2nd DHCP server on our network but

1) Our DHCP server is 5 years old and has worked without a hitch that entire time in supporting PCs and servers with multiple reservations, scope options, etc. We set up reservations for all phones.

2) The error takes place far more frequently than the 8-day dhcp lease expiration (or the 4-day "half life" of DHCP where machines might requets updates). Sometimes the same phone has the problem 3 times the same day. We would not expect the phones to have any need to communicate with the DHCP server so frequently.

3) That the problem starts with an erratic, static-y connection for 5-25 seconds before the phone fails and reboots does not sound me like something that could start with DHCP. DHCP is about IP addresses. Either you've got one or you don't. How could you intermittently gain and lose an IP address 10s of times a second (the only way I can imagine DHCP causing static and signal quality issues on a phone) over a 5-25 second period?

If all phones are rebooting at one time or another, then most probably there is an issue with the DPHC server. It seems as though they are loosing connection to the DHCP server, hence loss of IP addresses. When they reboot, they are basically trying to initialize and acquire new IP addresses. Please check your DHCP server reservations and swap it if possible as you mentioned. Please let us know if that solved the problem.
