My First NAS - Some questions !
« on: December 13, 2011, 03:50:19 PM »

Hello everyone !

I'm brand new on this forum, hope I'll get some answers to my "basic" questions. :D

I received my DNS-325 this morning (I live in France).

So, here are some questions I have, because I want to understand the range of my possibilities with this NAS (I never used one before).

First, could someone quickly tell me if I'm right about getting an DDNS account : I created my account on their website, then a hostname was required, so I gave a name that I would easily remember (because I guess that's the name I'll connect to later), and my actual IP address was shown. I didn't get any error message so I guess everything was right for this part, wasn't it ?
Because my problem is that I got a "Updated failure" when configuring my DDNS settings on the web interface ...
One precision : every ports are full open on my router so I don't think the error comes from here ... and DDNS option has also been configured.

Other question : I would like to use my NAS directly from my school (because a proxy is required there, and has a lot of constraints) so that I could access it as a VPN, or with a SSH access(port 22 isn't blocked at school), so that I could go freely on internet (proxy mainly controls HTTP requests on port 80).
Would one of thoose two proposition be possible with my NAS, and if so, HOW ? :D )

Another one : when my FTP server is fully ready, I would like to know how to (and I'm sorry if my questions seems really noob ...) :
- let ONE ONLY folder accessible from FTP (so other one unaccessible from anyone using FTP)
- in this folder, have different folders that can be specifly readable by one specific groupe, while another group would be able to only read another folder

Well, at the moment, thoose are the only main questions that come to my mind.
It would be really helpful to me if anyone could give some answers. ;)

Thank you !

Even if no answers at the moment, I would like to give some additionnal informations.

First, my FTP server is on and seem to work, I just can acces it with the public ip address if I'm at home (from anywhere else it's reachable). BUT, I still have my "Updated failure" error in "Network Management" while trying to conf my DDNS in my NAS.
But concerning my question about folder privacity in function of username, I handled this.

Secondly, I found some informations about hosting a VPN server, it's said that OpenVPN is used.
Note that I have already installed fun_plug to get some extra features on my NAS (if I welly understood), so that I could install OpenVPN. SSH is activated on it. Could someone explain to me how to install OpenVPN ?

So here is an updated list of questions :D

- Where does my "Updated failure" problem could come from ?
- Does somebody have the time to quickly give me some hints about installing OpenVPN on my NAS ?
- I would also know how to create some new users on the fun_plug part of my NAS (I guess the users created in the default NAS Administration are not taken in count in this new "part" of my NAS) ... so that I could give a limited SSH access to a friend (if that's possible ofc).

Thank you for taking the time to read anyway. ;)
