D-Link Germany has published a comprehensive guide on how to recover data from Ext3-formatted disks outside the DNS-box, using Ubuntu: DNS-325 Data Recovery (NB! In German)
PS For some strange reason have the german guys published quite a lot of guides that cover topics just briefly mentioned in the user's guide (eg setting up for TimeMachine/WebDAV/AudioStreamer etc, accessing shares from OS X, configuring remote backups, rebuilding degraded RAID1 configuration).
